Three masked thugs stormed a jewelry kiosk at Sunvalley Mall in Concord on Wednesday, smashing glass display cases and pepper spraying an employee before fleeing with stolen merchandise. The robbery happened just after 2 p.m. Witnesses reported the suspects shattered multiple cases in seconds, grabbing handfuls of jewelry while customers scattered. One of the thieves sprayed the kiosk worker with a chemical irritant, leaving them with minor injuries. The trio ran out of the mall and took off in a waiting car parked near the Sears entrance. Concord police are reviewing surveillance footage as they search for the suspects and the stolen items.

Why are they using glass still? This is almost a weekly occurrence … most jewelers have armed guards now days …. still…another example why SVM has gone downhill so much – and why I don’t shop there anymore … sad

It should be legal for an employee to shoot and kill any thief attempting to rob them.

only if they believe that theirs lives are in danger. Companies actually discourage confrontation for the property is insured. My hs friend drives for guarda; he carries a shotgun and a handgun but can’t use them unless he is shot in a robbery.

Well Paul way carry a gun at all if you have to be shot BEFORE you can defend you life?!?

Kind of defeats the purpose of being armed guard don’t you think?

I’m guessing you misheard your friend’s company policy.

Not really. Their policy is similar to the us military rule of engagement. They aren’t allowed to fire unless fired upon and told to not defend the money because it is insured.

If that truly is the policy, I doubt it was common knowledge …… until now.

I was surprised at the policy as well because what is the point of carry gun if you can’t take a first shot to protect yourself in a robbery.
But then if you look at the view of the corporation, it doesn’t want confrontation because of the possibly of expose itself to lawsuits (like employees, innocent bystanders getting injured) and the products (mostly cash) are insured. Another thing that i learned from my friend is that when the bank’s atm is fully stocked, there is $300k. Good place for thieves to target.

Kill the enemy, and make their family pay to clean up the mess. Nothing else seems
to deter them. When robbers start getting shot to death, other thieves will think twice
before robbing an establishment.

That’s the Doctrine of “Symetrical Warfare” as opposed to this “Asymmetrical Warfare” CRAP I say an Eye for an Eye!

Wishful thinking. that harsh punishment deters crimes doesn’t really work. Back in the day, people get hung for stealing horses but that didn’t stop horse stealing; people get hands and legs chop for stealing in the Middle East but yet there are still thieves. Maybe socialism (where everyone need is met) is the solution? 🤷‍♂️

Sorry Paul I’m not taking that chance…they made their choice I shouldn’t have to guess if they are trying to hurt me or if my life is at risk according to you!

Sometime I speculate that the jewelers make more money in the insurance claim than actually selling the jewelry.

Stealing is stealing and is criminal not caring about the insurance claim by the jewler…

Well this seems to happen monthly is Sunvalley Mall! Subconsciously I guess we’ve been avoiding it because of the bad feel there. We only will occasionally go to JCPenney’s first thing in the morning when they open.

Geez, SVM Jewelry stores get knocked over more than 7-11 does.

People suck.

Allow storeowners to shoot looters (that’s what they are) on sight without consequence and this baloney will stop pretty quick as soon as word gets out.

Or maybe they’ll just walk in & immediately shoot the owner, then break the glass.
or……
Maybe they should only have photographs of the jewelry on premises and do sizing & sales then deliver to customer’s residence or have customers pick up items in person by appointment only.
Satisfaction guaranteed or the option to refuse or return the item.
Locking Security Entrance would help too.
Maybe combining businesses like Jewelry stores, Banks, Gold Exchange, etc. in one building with multiple armed security guards would work better and be more affordable.
A lot of banks have room to spare already.

If it gets bad enough, we’ll be seeing jewelry thru a thick sheet of Lexan which will
be attached to 3/8 inch cabinet steel cabinets. Activating robbery alarm button sends
signal to all jewelry cases activating a 45 minute time lock delay.

what else is new? Insurance needs to drop that store. Security eating st Red Robin again.

I just keep on watching them run. They look soft.

They’re all on their way to selling on Amazon.

I saw the same group of guys, with more friends, trying to steal from dick sporting good’s around 6:30pm, I complemented their cute outfits. They arrived dressed nearly the same but added disposable blue masks and dripping in big fancy costume jewelry. I kept wondering if their Mommy’s know what they’re up to? They seemed to leave my side of the store with my massive complements

Reduced charges and plea bargaining.
CoCo county, the best place to do crime.

All on our dime! Recall Becton!!!

Sadly, that mall needs to close. Free-for-all for the thugs. I remem when that place was ‘it’ in the 70s.

Why don’t things like this happen in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas type states? Oh yah, nevermind.

They have no effective security at that mall. How many times does this need to happen? It is embarrassing. That poor employee, working at mall kiosk bad enough, then you get pepper sprayed in the face and frightened? It is sad that the City of Concord chooses to do nothing to improve Sun Valley. They have decided it is not worth saving. Our city council is too busy have meetings about what do about ICE to give a crap about what once was a large source of tax revenue for Concord. I guess Concord is just happy to have all those sales tax dollars go to Walnut Creek, where they actually understand that people will not shop and spend money if they are afraid.
