California’s License Plate Sequence Is Finally Running Out Of Gas After More Than Four Decades

According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the familiar license plate format of one number, three letters, and three numbers — like 1ABC234 — will be maxed out sometime next year. That combination system has been in use since 1980, starting with plate number 1AAA000, and after roughly 45 years, every possible combination is about to be claimed. The DMV says a new series will launch in 2026, essentially flipping the old design. Instead of 1AAA000, future plates will look like 000AAA1, opening up millions of fresh combinations for the decades ahead. But there’s still one burning question: who will end up with 9ZZZ999 — the very last plate of California’s long-running sequence?

Based on ALL of the Expired tags & the OLD paper plates I’m seeing………I would say that DMV doesn’t really care. Maybe they’ll get a “bailout”.

Who has or what happened with the vehicle that has the plate 1AAA000 ??

The first license plates issued in California were red with white letters and numbers, and
made of porcelain, I think it was around 1914. Before then, people made their own license
plates and were required to register them with the state.

I believe the first plate would be: 1AAA111 …??

How do you figure that?

DVM should allow more personalized plates.
DVM should allow anyone to say anything they want on their plates, even if it doesn’t
meet current standards.
If people want to be obscene, let them be obscene.
That’ll free up a few million plates and everyone will know who’s who.

Seems like an excuse for lousy record keeping.
