A man once asked me how to get to Martinez, but he pronounced it “MARTin-ez”, with the emphasis on the first syllable. Out-of-stater in a rental car, from somewhere with no Spanish-speaking exposure.
I like it when an out of stater calls Vallejo, Valley Jo or San Jose is San Joes. But I have to
admit, I’m guilty of mispronouncing the name of a city, too. When I was visiting Washington,
I called Spokane just like it’s spelled, “spoe cane.” The locals quickly corrected me, it’s pronounced “spoe can.”

Anybody that calls San Francisco, “Frisco.” are most likely not from around here.
Local natives know it has always been referred to as San Francisco, or simply as
“The City.”

They are Amish or Hasidic Jew.
Or they are Chinese…. ( they seem a bit disoriented ).
They’re speaking in another language.
Sometimes tourists, sometimes immigrants (illegal or legal).
We’re becoming a 3rd world country….
When they wear those wraps around there heads and also when they have an accent.
They think Governor Newsom is presidential material …
It was harder than I thought to type that with a straight face!
You know someone is out of town when they say they are going to take “The BART”.
when they refer to California as ‘Cali’
All of the aforementioned, as well as Con-cord.
Some of the aforementioned, at the time of replying. Little bit of us/them showing up.
Yes,Connnnncord,some say.
You Betcha
Also, the people who say “The 5” or “The 680” instead of just 5 or 680, are always from Los Angeles.
They keep talking about something
called ‘humidity’. I have my doubts
but I don’t want to appear rude.
They say it’s a thing though. 🤷♂️
They use their turn signals.
A Trump bumper sticker.
An American flag on their porch or represented on their vehicle somehow.
If the American flag sticker on their car is upside down, they are from around here.
They are surprised to see homeless encampments and people standing at stoplights with cardboard signs asking for money.
They have some common sense.
The way they panic for a little earthquake…. LoL!
