Possible Harmful Algal Bloom Reported At Martinez Marina

The City of Martinez is warning the public about a possible harmful algal bloom (a rapid increase in the population of algae in an aquatic system) in the waters at the Martinez Marina. These types of blooms can pose serious health risks to humans, pets, and wildlife. City officials are urging people to avoid contact with the water and keep pets and children away from the shoreline. Swimming in the affected areas is strongly discouraged. Warning signs have been posted around the Marina to alert visitors of the potential danger.

The City is actively monitoring the situation and coordinating with state and local agencies. Information about the suspected bloom, including updates and statewide reports, is available on the State Water Quality Monitoring Council’s website at mywaterquality.ca.gov. Officials say they will continue to provide updates as conditions evolve.

Probably growing like mad because the water is so warm since it is too shallow…. dredge it.

…. sooooooo with a planned rebuild , remodel and upgrade to the marina ….what are the plans to mitigate this in the future for Martinez Harbor?

There’s nothing to do. 3 or 4 years ago there was an algae bloom that spread across the entire Bay. The water was an opaque ruddy brown for months.

I must have missed that… never heard about it.
There have been some man made problems with Frank’s Tract as a result of damming False River for a couple of summers trying to limit salt intrusion into our drinking water.
Slowing the flow of water caused a massive growth of weeds and we have been dealing with that for several years now.
There are some plans for dredging the tract to an average depth of 27′ to halt the weed growth and increase the fresh water supply but the Frank’s Tract Futures Project seems to be getting slow walked into never happening and in the meantime the tract is just being bombed with weed killer, but the weeds are winning and who knows what the weed killer is doing to the environment.

@ Yoyo, I found the story you were referring to, it was red tide in 2023.

Yes. They happen about every 3-4 years – typically at the end of the summer. But 2023’s red tide was unprecedented in its size and longevity. I work in the marine industry, so I’ve seen my share.
