The Water Cooler – Do You Think All Cities Should Have Speed Cameras?

The “Water Cooler” is a feature on Claycord.com where we ask you a question or provide a topic, and you talk about it.

QUESTION: Do you think all cities should have speed cameras? Speed cameras are automated traffic enforcement devices that monitor vehicle speeds and take photos (and sometimes videos) of vehicles going over the posted speed limit. Authorities review the evidence, and if it checks out, they send a citation to the registered owner of the vehicle.

No, I think it’s an invasion of privacy.

So you don’t want to be held accountable while you’re breaking the law and endangering other people? Right on!

No, I do not.

I don’t speed or break any other laws, I just don’t like the idea of being filmed everywhere we go doing everything we do. Especially with data aggregation and tracking, we have already given up so many rights for the sake of safety.

If the democrat politicians and all of their supporters hadn’t created the rampant crime and totally lawless situation and we are now in, then we wouldn’t need all the widespread cameras.

Is getting arrested for robbing a bank invasion of privacy, too?

Under what theory is being recorded in public an invasion of privacy?

Whereas I do agree with the sentiment of Government overreach and intrusion with surveillance camaras, generally speaking, there is no expectation of privacy for things visible in public that said
“Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety” – Benjamin Franklin.

Absolutely yes. Too many speeders out there that have no regard for our laws and for lives of other people. The fines could used for more speeding enforcement.

The cameras, the processing the fines and collections are third party contractors. The pejorative of the fines going to them. Not law enforcement

21

Ok. In that case, raise the fines.

Looks like many drivers here against them, just like the many many drivers out there that run red lights, drive over speed limits, tailgate, run stop signs, pass in the slow lanes, drive recklessly, drive drunk, run over our kids…..

Don’t have a problem with ’em, I’m the old fart doin’ speed limit,
they’re all passing. Newer cars broadcast your position, speed and route.
Matter of time, when you go over limit, they’ll automatically mail you the ticket.
I’ll keep my full size American mid 1990s, no big brother . . . . . . . . .

No.
If someone is going 36 mph. in a 35 mph. zone, is that person gonna get a ticket?

What we need is increased enforcement of deliberate red light violators!
I constantly see drivers run the red light even after it turns red (not even going through a yellow and then the light turning red).
This has to stop because people will be hurt/killed.
I’ve seen cops watch it happen and they do nothing.

No. Speed cameras, red light cameras, cameras to deter crime, license plate reading cameras, cameras in classrooms, cameras targeting illegally parked vehicles, workplace cameras, cameras in public parks. Where does it end?
Too many cameras have already been installed on public streets and parks, most without regulations and with little to no public debate. They pose a significant threat to our privacy and do not reduce crime. Public surveillance cameras are not about public safety, they are about generating more revenue, not only for local governments, but for the corporations that operate and maintain the cameras.
When cameras are installed for the purpose of regulating traffic, there will be more people hitting their brakes to avoid a ticket, which can potentially cause a chain reaction leading to more accidents. There have been many studies done on the pros and cons of traffic control cameras, with a 40% increase in traffic accidents involving injury being one of the cons.
Public surveillance cameras are a liberal concept, and I do not trust liberals.

There are cameras everywhere now. If you’re outside your house, you are being filmed. Too bad so sad… Don’t break the law!

10

No.

If a friend borrows my truck for something and gets nailed by a speed camera why should I be the one to get ticketed? I’d be for them if they had to prove who was driving the vehicle. Having the ticket go to the registered owner is BS.

Wasnt there a car manufacture that was going to install a speed limiter to prevent speeding?

2
3

NO, the existing traffic cameras, license plate reading cameras (which also collects other vehicle information), and the sending out of drones on a daily basis is bad enough. Government shouldn’t be surveilling and spying on us as we travel, but too many people have fallen for the line that it’s for “public safety.”

  • I don’t like speed cameras because I speed. Otherwise they are a great idea.

no. big brother needs to back off.

Yes. We need speed camera. Sf placed a few cameras at problematic locations. The fines are relatively to the speed over the speed limit; for example $25 when it is 10 miles over the speed. We really need the technology on Clayton road and ynaccio valley road and among others. We also need license plate reader because it helps solve crimes by placing the perpetrators near the location of the crimes. For those of you don’t know, Clayton pd has a license reader at the one way in and out of town .

It’s axiomatic. Every little bit of intrusion you allow
every freedom abridged, every privacy surveilled,
in the end doesn’t make you any safer.
Only thing that changes who you have to worry about.

I always have my dashcam on and I drive alot.
Piss me off bad enough and I’ll put you on Facebook.

What’s facebok?

I say no. BTW, they have them in Italy. A couple of years ago I got a ticket in the mail for 5km/h (3.1MPH) over the limit in a 35km/h (22MPH) zone. Oh well, it was a great Italian road trip.

I’ve been on a few of those, different country, same continent.
Theres a I don’t know…satisfaction I guess.
A8 from Stuttgart past Munich to Salzburg.
Then back. Yeah. 👊🏼

No. If there is a problem with the area then police should be deployed to correct it (speed traps, cruisers and radar…..) not some automated pile of crap that singles you out of the pact doing the same thing. Everyone would change their mind here if you were simply going with the flow of traffic and suddenly you get a $300+ ticket in the mail. And clam down… these things are not for the speeder that is racing around with no care for others they are simply for generating revenue on the backs of the population.

Good idea.
However, thanks to the state Democrat politicians and their supporters we now have massive crime and criminals running wild in once safe communities. Also, we have DAs( elected by the same supporters of criminals and crime) that prioritize the enabling of criminals.
Nowadays the law enforcement agencies are swamped and overwhelmed with arresting, rearresting, rerearreting….
criminals.
