DeSaulnier Bill Aims To Rein In CEO Salaries and Boost Worker Power

Congressman Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10) introduced the CEO Accountability and Responsibility Act (H.R. 5019), a bill that he says would limit corporate greed, invest in working Americans, and reduce income inequality.

“As working Americans struggle with higher costs of living and diminished power in the workplace, ultrawealthy CEOs and large corporations are profiting hand over fist at their employees’ expense and rewarding themselves with exorbitant salaries and bonuses,” said Congressman DeSaulnier. “While Republicans bend over backwards to help their CEO friends get richer and support tariffs that make everything more expensive, I’m countering their misguided efforts to put the power back where it really belongs—with workers—to put an end to excessive corporate greed that is eroding the middle class and threatening our democracy.”

While in the 1970s, the average CEO earned roughly 20 to 30 times the compensation of a typical worker, that disparity has exploded with estimates placing the ratio at over 300:1 for top S&P 500 companies. To address this imbalance, experts stress that workforce development—such as fair wage structures, employee engagement, and hr training initiatives—must be prioritized alongside legislative reform to ensure workers are treated equitably.

The CEO Accountability and Responsibility Act would increase corporate taxes on companies that have extreme disparities between CEO and worker pay. It would also offer preferential treatment in federal contracts to companies with pay ratios below 50:1, creating stronger incentives for businesses to close the wage gap and foster fairer workplaces. Firms like Austen Parsons CPA Services support such initiatives by promoting transparent financial practices and equitable compensation strategies within organizations. “… and threatening democracy” — they use that line for everything. How would this “invest in working Americans”. Mark, what are you doing to attract businesses to the state? That would really help the ‘workers’.

Such an overused party slogan. Should someone tell him we’re not a democracy? We’re a Constitutional Republic. Huge difference.

Guess he thinks this will make him look like he’s really doing something….. he must be bored with nothing else to do

I think most CEO salaries aren’t worthy of them because they are displaying poor judgment and due to affliction with the “Peter Principle”. Most of them bought into some rather stupid ideologies like those promoted by the World Economic Forum. I think that many old socialists like some college professors still believe that communism is the way to go despite that we’ve seen over the last 100 years that is not the case. And the last regime which was a Democrat one did a lot of damage to workers putting more and more into bankruptcy and poverty. They want to rule just as much with an iron fist as the “fascists” they appear to deplore.

What a surprise, US versus THEM . . . . . . .
.
There are CEOs who deserve a higher salary, commensurate with their
immense responsibility. Wrong decisions can put a business out of
business. An where’s the blame corporate board members ? ? ?
.
What a wonderful smoke screen, to gain votes and campaign contributions
from unions and their members.
This is not a new refrain, has been put forth by democrats before elections.
Same deal as reparations, carrot gets dangled and after election it fades away.
.
“The best minds are not in government.
If any were, business would steal them away.”
–Ronald Reagan
.
Would much rather have CEO of a multi billion dollar corporation, non politician,
as governor. State would be far better off ! ! ! We’d be gaining businesses rather
than watching them leave California.

Hey Marky Mark..how about we reign in government spending?

Good Gravy!!! Will the communists never learn?
It is a stupid, childish concept that if the boss is making a lot of money then the workers can’t make good money too.
Imagine turning over business decisions like this to the government at any level!!!
Will the voters of California never learn?

spoken like an individual with marxist leanings who has been sucking from the government teat for too long. So a man who “represents” a single district thinks he should limit the earning potential of individuals who run major corporations that provide thousands of thousands of jobs because HE thinks they make too much. Nice to bring out that old tripe about Republicans bending over backward for CEO friends. I do not recall this dullard making this complaint every time a soros visited the last admin. if anything, theses commies, I mean dems really do look for new ways to tax. golf is a fun game mark, I suggest you focus on that and drop governing, for the betterment of all of America.

I would call him a dipstick, but a dipstick serves a purpose, unlike you Marky!

https://www.termlimits.com/congressmen-get-what/

So what does our champion of reducing income inequity get paid?

$174,000 annual salary.
$139,000 annual pension (when retired).
The ability to vote in a raise.
Cadillac health care paid for.

Numerous other perks and incentives.

Anybody else getting this without producing quality results? Didn’t think so.

Looks to me like Mark is calling the kettle black.

Way to drive businesses out of California, moron.

Killjoy!
made me smile when I saw
your handle.

Once again, the above post is fake, an imposter is posting using my name… and posting stupid opinions.
Please stop… I will expose you every time you do it.

BTW-
Sure the majority of the illegals are mooching all the freebies they can get but don’t tell me they don’t want to work hard, the Hispanic guys that is, they want all the work they can get and they send as much as they can to support their families south of the border where the rate of exchange is great. They basically live in poverty up here, but they are here illegally & that means they gotta go.
As far as I’m concerned, if I have to obey the law so does everyone else!

How much is the annual compensation for George Soros, YOUR CEO?

Ah, there it is – the last part. Increase taxes on companies that pay the CEO too much.

That’s the ticket.

This guy is such a stupid moron..nothing surprises me anymore.

A true Marxist. That’s Karl Marx, not Groucho Marx. Groucho would be a better choice than this moron.

Economics 101 stupid…if people feel they are not getting paid for their jobs then they will find others. The CEO has the most skin in the game so of course they will make the most “How has this hurt you?” Are you still looking for worker “equity”???? never going to happen. You should be gracious that we have jobs that fit our skill set and are free to find other opportunity if we feel unappreciated. Let’s increase corporate taxes (sarcasm) as that will not trickle down to the consumer (more sarcasm) This guy definitely takes a stupid pill in the morning or he thinks we are all stupid and don’t understand how money works. The higher cost of living is driven by consumer costs “IE $20 per hr minimum wage and so many others the libs have campaigned on”comment image

Income inequality and corporate domination of workers reminds me of the song written by Merle Travis and popularized by Tennessee Ernie Ford, Sixteen Tons.

“You load sixteen tons and what do you get, another day older and deeper in debt. St. Peter don’t you call me ’cause I can’t go. I owe my soul to the company store.”

10

Absolutely correct. No matter what they promise you will earn the world will be on step ahead. So we will never be fooled by jerks like this.

when will he ever stop being useless, fake, but a true piece of crap?

can you imagine”free stores” it would be like shrimp night at Golden Corral, and although everything would be “free” anyone going there would grab stuff and run away like they usually do and the place would be empty 5 minutes after the doors unlock.1 want 12 dem to explain how a free store would ever work with multiple injuries and death every day at all of them.
Mamdami is a cartoon character.Workers?it would be a low gubment salary, fake Mark.

oops 1 dem or 12 can explain this…..

How about Markie’s salary?

it’s time for the people who dress in white, who carry big nets, and who work the place with rubber rooms to come pay Mort a visit.

So, if the democrats pull this off how will they get bribes(political donations) from the big corporations?

Mark DeSaulnier, I implore you, I challenge you, to do ONE single actual concrete thing that directly improves the lives of the people you represent. Here are some things people in your area need help with:

More police/traffic enforcement so we reduce our chances of being killed by a red-light runner
Provide tax breaks to companies who help their employees pay for child daycare or other ways to make child care less expensive for working parents
Incentivize building ADUs so seniors can live with family rather than stay alone or go to nursing home
Responsibly increase housing (high density areas near transit hubs)
Get homeless people into treatment or jail-their choice. No more freaking people out at shopping centers
Figure out how to get insurance from dropping everyone
Figure out how to get people’s PG&E bills down-I barely turn on my a/c this summer and I am still being charged close to $500/month
Bring more business to the area that are family friendly or well paying jobs
Anything that can lower the punishing cost of living for Bay Area residents
Demolish the Starbucks at Treat and Clayton

Instead you constantly showboat. Yes I think CEOs are often paid too much. But of ALL the things that can benefit your constituents, you only ever choose to work on the things that make you look (you think) like a hero with his cape flapping in the wind and it is so predictable, disappointing, and useless. I liked you better 25 years ago when you donated books to the library. At least that was something we could use.

Mort(like all the other California democrat politicians) couldn’t care less about hard working, law abiding, tax paying, go to work every day, law abiding citizens.
Good luck.

Spoken like a true Communist.

Since when can government MANDATE the maximum pay that a CEO can make? Apparently he has no concept of how a large business operates….

This bill will go nowhere, but it makes it “look” like he’s “doing some.”

Mark just STOP!! Most of the money CEO’s make are in stock options. Look at Tim Cook’s and Elon Musks salaries from cash vs stock options. What’s next are you going to cap athletes pay. Ohtani is making 70 mill a year playing baseball. At least a CEO running a company is keeping its business alive, employing people and making investors money.
