A 57-year-old man suspected of shooting at cars Thursday afternoon on eastbound Highway 24 in Oakland was arrested after he crashed his vehicle in Walnut Creek, according to the California Highway Patrol said.
Carlos Ray Thomas of Oakland allegedly shot at vehicles, hitting two, about 3:45 p.m. on Highway 24 west of Old Tunnel Road, the CHP said.
No one was injured in the shooting and one of the cars that was hit stopped near the scene. A second victim called authorities after arriving home to report that their vehicle had also been struck by gunfire.
After the shooting, 911 callers gave authorities a description of the suspect’s vehicle as it continued on eastbound Highway 24 into Contra Costa County, the CHP said.
Shortly after 4 p.m., the suspect’s vehicle crashed into a center divide on southbound Interstate Highway 680 near Olympic Boulevard in Walnut Creek.
Thomas got out of the vehicle and was trying to get away on foot when he was detained by CHP officers.
The firearm allegedly used in the shooting was also recovered.
Thomas was later booked into Santa Rita jail on suspicion of multiple crimes, including attempted murder and shooting from a vehicle.
