Today is the 36th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. It happened on October 17, 1989, and measured 6.9 on the richter scale. It killed 63 people and injured thousands more.

Do you remember the quake, and if so, where were you when it happened on October 17, 1989 at 5:04 p.m.?

Comissary @ NAS Alameda Glass and liquid all over the floor. Started shaking, slowed down, then shook harder. Might have been the marshy soil.

I was home in Pittsburg, and we just barely felt it. But one of my customers at NSC Oakland, and we had a workspace in one of the warehouses. The warehouse was in shambles, and a shelving unit fell against the door to our space. It took some serious shoving to get the door open enough for our smallest technician to crawl in and start moving equipment away from the door.

NSC Oakland was closed during the BRAC process, and I believe earthquake damage played a large part of the decision.

Happy Birthday, Roz! Wishing you a shake-free day.😊

I was at the Port of Oakland at the time, so we had a good view of the Bay Bridge and could see the section that collapsed. The worst part was the drive back to Concord. It took about
1/2 an hour to drive through the Caldecott Tunnel. So here I am stuck in the tunnel with the
radio on, listening to them telling us about the collapse of houses and freeways, and thinking
I just want to get out of the tunnel before it collapses too. About a month later, when the bridge reopened, we took a drive into the City and walked around the Marina District where it was hit the hardest. There were a lot of houses leaning out towards the street being held up with boards, and parked cars that were crushed by the houses that collapsed and fell over them.
Lots of rubble too, it was a mess. One thing I can say is, there wasn’t any police presence because there wasn’t any looting. San Francisco was still a fairly safe place in 1989.

Yea ok I see no reason to go all whoopie on this.

Yes. I was in the front yard with my young son and my daughter in her play pen on the front yard.
My brother-in-law was at the World Series.
