Ceremonial Cultural Burn Scheduled At Cal State East Bay Concord Campus On October 25

The mak-warép Ohlone Land Conservancy, working with Cal State East Bay’s Concord Campus, CAL FIRE, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, and the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District, will hold a ceremonial cultural burn covering less than one acre at the Concord Campus off Ygnacio Valley Rd. in Concord.

The burn, according to organizers, continues efforts to restore Indigenous-led fire practices in the East Bay, honoring Ohlone cultural traditions and improving the ecological health of the land. The project aims to reduce invasive grasses, improve soil conditions, and restore native plants used for food, medicine, and basketry.

Smoke may be visible on Saturday, October 25, near Cal State East Bay’s Concord Campus at 4700 Ygnacio Valley Road between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., depending on weather and air quality conditions. The invitation-only event will begin with a private Ohlone ceremony, followed by a controlled cultural burn led by Ohlone firekeepers under cultural protocols.

“…The invitation-only event…” … Where is the inclusivity! I’m all for the prescribed burns that the extreme environmental groups prevented over the years. I’m for conservation and being a good custodian of the land.

No spare the air day on the 25th then…
I guess I’ll go to Brentwood Fine Meats and grab a Vineyard marinated tri tip for the bbq! Things might get a bit smokey out here but the aroma will be wonderful !
Better than a Concord grass fire for sure!

Wait a minute who invited the Indians to this? Cultural burn wtf, this is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of.
So they gave back Columbus Day so now they got to come up with this to have their own day?
