Home » The Water Cooler – Should People Be Allowed To Rent Out Their Entire Homes On Airbnb With No Yearly Limit – Or Should Cities Be Allowed To Cap It?
Yes and No.
Yes, people should be able to use their own property as they wish.
The government should have NO control over private enterprise.
Now, if people behave irresponsibly and abuse their privileges, a judge could take those privileges away, not the government.

Why should the City manage how you deal with YOUR property… They already interfere with how you manage its income.

What did one Airbnb say to the other? “I’ve got a great place here, but you have to admit, the best part of our job is hearing the guests say ‘This is better than my own house’!”

If your house is zoned as commercial, yes. If your house is zoned residential, no.

I don’t believe in Airbnb at all. It’s unfair to the neighbors. If you want to own a hotel, buy one. Homes are in a residential zone, not a commercial one.
My beliefs were confirmed on October 31, 2019. A mass shooting on Halloween night in Orinda. Orindans pay a lot of money to live there and shouldn’t have to put up with this BS. Or for that matter, in any neighborhood.
Airbnb is nothing but trouble and has been for a long time. If you’re too cheap to rent a hotel room, that’s on you.
Ban Airbnb. This was a homeowner in Orinda who claimed he didn’t know there would be a “party” on Halloween night. Not a family struggling to pay rent and put food on the table every month.

They should at the least be limited to the number of guest and vehicles allowed. We have a neighbor who does this most of the summer and the vehicles cause issues with steet visibility as well as noise with the larger groups.
This is the problem though – AirBNB has No way to control that nor are they willing to! I say a BIG no to having hotels in neighborhoods. My other comment wouldn’t post, but I always see other commenters posting things such as: “It’s Their Property, they can do as they Please”.
Really? This is the very reason for zoning ordinances, noise ordinances etc………and these are City rules not just HOA.

I am mixed on this. I hate the level of regulation and government involving itself into such transactions, but then I think of all the fun rentals that occurred in Orinda. I guess I would land on they should not be able to limit and not have government interference such as this. Besides, at some point they would change their minds once they calculated how much tax revenue they would be missing.
When Common sense and respect for your neighbors and property values are negatively impacted……..government needs to step in. It’s simple – Buy some Acreage out of City limits and do as you please!

Someone should really ban mass shootings.
