John Muir Health Reaches Rare Milestone With Fourth Magnet Designation In Concord

John Muir Health’s Concord Medical Center has received Magnet® recognition for the fourth time, one of the nation’s highest honors for nursing excellence and quality patient care. The medical center was first designated in 2010 and redesignated in 2015 and 2020. John Muir Health’s Walnut Creek Medical Center is also Magnet-recognized, placing both facilities among fewer than 10% of hospitals nationwide and only 59 in California to hold this distinction.

The Magnet program requires a rigorous review process, including extensive documentation, an on-site appraisal, and demonstrated improvements in patient care. During their October visit, appraisers noted a strong culture of empowerment, collaboration, and consistently high standards. Nurses expressed pride in the level of care provided and in the environment they’ve helped create.

This year’s recognition highlighted Concord Medical Center’s strong nurse education levels, low turnover, exemplary patient safety performance, effective infection prevention efforts, and rapid emergency heart care. Magnet-recognized hospitals must reapply every four years and show continuous improvement in outcomes such as reduced mortality, shorter hospital stays, and enhanced patient experience.

John Muir Health states that the fourth Magnet designation reflects its ongoing commitment to delivering exceptional care to patients, families, and the community.
