Repairs on a broken water main in the city of Walnut Creek were completed Saturday morning, and water was restored to affected customers, according to the East Bay Municipal Utility District.

The 70-year-old water main at Ygnacio Valley Road and Homestead Avenue broke on Thursday and disrupted water service in the area.

The repair work on the 16-inch pipe involved removing a traffic signal and excavating 9 feet down in an area where there are multiple utility lines, which made the work “complex,” according to a statement from EBMUD.

Crews will continue backfilling the work site on Saturday afternoon. The intersection is expected to open by 8 p.m. after work by PG&E and other local agencies is complete.

The traffic signal will have to be replaced by the city of Walnut Creek, the statement from EBMUD said. Drivers were urged to continue to avoid the area until the work site is clear.
