It is all on line or though the mail now. The letter I received said you cannot go the DMV office anymore for renewals.
The renewal fee is $46 plus a 1.95% fee (.90¢) for using a card for a grand total off$46.90. ETA is two weeks to a month. I renewed my on line about 10 days ago and I’m still waiting…

No …….the questions on the written are varied and thorough – and scrambled from one tester to another …. and if the Examiner is doing their job and being objective and by the book – that’s good. It’s AFTER the person gets their license and develops the “me first” self entitled attitude that is becoming so prevalent now… and that’s to drivers at any age these days.

That is exactly why voter ID should be mandatory in all states

My driving test was so easy, the examiner only asked me one question: ‘Can you see the car?’ I said ‘Yes,’ and he handed me my license.

Depend on the examiner and local dmv, when I first got my driver license, i passed on the third attempt for behind the wheel test.
The third examiner did me a favor and told me that I was on the near the passing score but he pass me. I have been driving for 30 plus years, only 1 California roll.

From California commercial driver license handbook, . “If you communicate in a language other than Eng- lish, or fail to comprehend instructions given to you in English, during the skills tests (vehicle inspection, basic control skills, and road test), you will receive a verbal warning for the first 2 offenses committed on the same test date. Upon the third offense com- mitted on the same test date, the test will end as an automatic failure.” https://www.dmv.ca.gov/web/eng_pdf/comlhdbk.pdf . IF above policy is being followed, then how is it possible commercial drivers with CA licenses are failing roadside English proficiency tests. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq3SYlWBC4s . My question, how did this guy get a license ? ? ? How many more don’t understand English ? ? ? ? . So, it’s more important to hand out commercial DL than keeping the public SAFE ? ? ? ? ? Have any people been fired by the state ? ? ? . Guess democrats gaining control of U.S. House of Representatives is more important than the SAFETY of your Loved Ones . . . . . . . Those running CA allowed this to happen.
Makes sense. They disregard safety protocols that were already in place. Why?

While no, I do believe that it’s too easy to keep it
despite how bad one might be.
tickets, accidents, registration and insurance should all be suspended if not lost for driving over 100.
if one can’t keep their speed or paperwork under control how does one keep a moving vehicle safe?
Etoh or drugs and it should be lost for some time

I don’t know how it is now, I got my first license when I was a teen, and in those days
they’d give a temporary license to anybody that can pass the written and driving test
without asking for proof of age or who you are. They’d run a background check and
if you checked out, they’d mail you the permanent license. If you didn’t check out, they’d
send you a letter saying you were denied. Meanwhile, you’d have a temporary license
that was good for six months. When I was 16, I got a license that said I was 21. The
DMV would issue the temporary license, and I had a valid ID to use to get into bars.
Even after it expired, most bars and liquor stores would sell to me. My friends did it
too, and we’d go to the Condor Club in North Beach to see Carol Doda dance topless.
Renewing my license is easy as pie, I always fly through the written test with a 100%
score. Before I take the test, I will sit in my car and go over the new laws in the DMV
handbook, that way the answers will be fresh in my head.
We only went there a couple of times, and she always made her entrance on the
piano. We were kids still in high school, and we didn’t stay long, we just wanted to
take a peek to see what the fuss was all about with her dancing topless. Topless
dancing was new, and the newspaper’s made a big deal about her entrance on a
baby grand piano suspended by wires. She was a San Francisco icon and was
known as the girl on the piano. Google has pictures of her on the piano.
I was driving around East County this morning doing a small job & it was the thickest tule fog I’ve ever seen, visibility was about 40′ … tops.
Still, there were drivers (mostly in white or gray vehicles) driving around with no lights on.
Very stealthy, practically invisible until they passed by.
Really, seriously, stupid beyond belief.
The worst one was a guy in a gray van, no lights & he was texting.
On our drive to Walnut Creek this morning, about a third of the vehicles didn’t have their lights on. And the gray ones were the hardest to see, of course;

The driver license exam is not a psychology test. It would take that to screen out bad drivers if at all possible. I notice neurotic behavior frequently exhibited by “bad drivers” who often drive like the “white rabbit” from Alice in Wonderland (“I’m late, I’m late, to a very important date”).

I don’t know here….. I commute (for a year or two more “retirement”) and I see some stupid things. I actually have a dash-cam to document these things. I think there should be remedial drives tests “not written” but road tests to judge proficiency. Not going to stop the jerks out there hell bent on self destruction “you know who I am talking about Tesla drivers” but may remind people there are others on the road than you.

It can’t be that easy:
I was standing at DMV and three teenage girls came out from taking the written test. At least two had failed and were complaining that the test was too hard.
The term “driver license” is incorrect; it’s actually a “transportation appliance operator’s permit.” There is no proof required that you can actually drive, which includes being able to respond correctly to emergency situations and reduced traction in rain and snow. You should be required to show enough car control and reaction time to at least recover from a skid in wet conditions and maneuver to avoid accidents or other obstructions. This would require a test on a wet skid pad. There should also be a test where you approach 3 or 4 lanes at something like 45 MPH with traffic lights that are green and 3 of them suddenly change to red, requiring maneuvering through the green lane at something like 0.5g, less than any car currently on the road can easily do.
The current system is a bad joke. There would also be an extra benefit if the above was implemented, as traffic would be significantly reduced by having fewer drivers on the road. Car insurance rates should also be reduced.
Obviously! so many bad drivers on the road.
Of course they are some of these “people” can’t even read or speak english yet there they are causing accidents…
I hope so because I need to renew my CDL.
