Spare The Air Alert Extended Through Saturday, Banning Wood Burning In Bay Area

Spare the Air Alerts that ban the burning of wood will be in effect through Saturday in the Bay Area because of a forecast for high levels of pollution, regional air quality officials said.

The Bay Area Air District had previously issued an alert for Thursday and extended it through Saturday because of cold temperatures and offshore winds that have led to high levels of pollution in the region.

On Spare the Air days, it is illegal for residents and businesses to use their fireplaces, wood stoves, pellet stoves, outdoor fire pits, or other wood-burning devices. There are exemptions, such as for homes without permanently installed heating, according to the air district.

People found to have violated the wood burning ban will be encouraged to take a wood smoke awareness course if it is their first offense. Violators who don’t take the course will receive a $100 ticket, and subsequent violations will lead to higher fines.

Wood smoke exposure has been linked to respiratory illnesses and an increased risk of heart attacks and some types of cancer, and is particularly harmful for children, older adults, and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions, air district officials said.

They act like this makes a difference just like banning plastic bags at the grocery store but then everything you buy is wrapped in plastic…same problems as in the 80’s just a new new shiny bow and wrapping!

Smokers won’t notice a problem with the air.

Air Quality in Walnut Creek is 26 (good). Geez, Bay Area Air District, get your stuff right.

They do this to keep their climate change minions fired up.

Given lowered threshold limit, don’t be surprised if alerts
continue thru next Wednesday.

I see your ban and raise you a chemtrail.

Collusion with PG@E. No money to be made from self-sufficiency.

A Wood Smoke Awareness Course.
How ordinary, just like a wed wose………..
Our Governor has made statements to the effect he is more troubled by polluted air affecting children of color than children not of color.
I would be glad to pay for both Newsom and Bass to take a Wood Smoke Awareness Course so they may become, shall we say, more enlightened.
Sadly they would just pay one of their stooges to attend.

Why are people upset about this???
It’s been in the 60s in the daytime the last few weeks. We barely had any Autumn weather. That’s not even near cold enough weather to burn wood. Even at night. Most sane people like to take walks in the day time and not breathe in tons of smoke. Here is a tip: Put on a sweater, get a blanket, or a heating pad. It’s the Bay Area. Not Alaska.

33 at night, nice to wake up with some warmth created by a fire as PG&E is so costly. I will take a walk today hoping not to have too many fossil fuel burning vehicles polluting up the area around me.

@Country Gal
Why? Because American citizens don’t need any unelected groups dictating to them what they can and can’t do with their fireplaces. The temperature has nothing to do with anything.

I wonder if they will ban barbecues at the 49ers tailgate parties.

Not enough people burn anymore for it to even matter. This is all about control and their desire to eventually prohibit burning completely.
