Cowellian’s first.
Winter is nigh!
Another happy friday Cowellian.
With these peets coffee closures looks like i have to find a new coffee spot. Maybe philz in walnut creek will be my new place.
Bundle up four inches of snow down your way Saturday.
Mornin’ y’all!
We’ve seen the first few snowflakes. The weather-guessers are saying we should get about 6″ of snow on top of ½” of ice.
I already bought milk, and Mrs Cowellian baked fresh sourdough bread.
Nashville Electric Co is predicting rolling outages, so I’m really happy that we had a natural gas Generac installed after the 2023 Christmas storms.
Silver went over $100 per ounce today. Gold is barely under $5000. Spicy times!
I saw this coming years ago. Unlike most things I had seen coming years ago, this one actually happened. Glad I bought those 6 coins, yes, a whole 6.
If only we knew, where it’s at

Silly question, what is your favorite Western? Obviously the more the merrier. Please explain why (not that this is a blatant attempt for me to find Westerns to watch, or anything).
For me, almost every Clint Western (barring mules for sister and Hang ’em High), Long Riders (the Northfield robbery scene is phenomenal), Open Range (the final showdown, fantastic, particularly the event with Butler) and Silverado (Costner is surprisingly good in the Westerns I have seen). Last one I will mention is more a blatant hint-You’re a daisy if you do!”
Blazing Saddles, is in my top 3 favorite movies, but does it count as a real Western?
I agree with pretty much any Clint Eastwood movie.
Back on the Ustafish, Terrence Hill’s Trinity series was very popular with the crew.
I enjoyed Bronson/Ireland in From Noon till Three.
And Cat Ballou is on the list because it was very funny, and it was made before Fonda went publicly treasonous.
Cat Ballou and Paint Your Wagon.
Blazing saddles UNCUT version!
Yeah, the 17-minute version offends me.
It’s twu! …. IT’S TWU!
The best part in Cat Ballou was Kid Shelleen’s (Lee Marvin) horse.
Did you know the horse actually won an award for his performance
as a drunk horse?
On Jane Fonda, and other actors I may disagree with, I watch a
movie for its entertainment value and put politics aside. If I didn’t,
I’d be missing out on a lot of fairly good movies. I do not like Robert
De Niro as a person, but he’s a great actor and I will watch his movies.
Lee Marvin’s Oscar acceptance speech credits the horse!
So many to choose from…. Tombstone was great, so was Open Range, except for the scene where Costner milks 12 or 13 + shots from the same pistol without reloading – (start video at 45 seconds in).

So many of the old black & white westerns were great.. Stagecoach, The Oxbow Incident,
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Fort Apache, Rio Grande, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, How The West Was Won….. I can’t decide!
… any of Clint’s spaghetti westerns & of course Blazing Saddles
I agree with any Clint Eastwood movie, Western or not. He starred in the best of the best, and he’s easy on the eyes.
If I had to choose a favorite as a kid, I’d say Paint Your Wagon. I was mesmerized by that movie, but I was too young to remember why.
Blazing Saddles was the funniest!
I’ve watched The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly at least 20 times, more than any other western, so that probably means it’s my favorite. Slow West, with Michael Fassbender, came out about 10 years ago. It’s excellent, but I don’t think anyone saw it.
“When you have to shoot, shoot…..don’t talk.”
Not to mention “The Terror Of Tiny Town” and “Lust In The Dust”
Paranoid pablito,
The Danish National Symphony Orchestra must have had you in mind.

I have a fondness for the Howard Hawks John Wayne Trifecta: Rio Bravo, Eldorado, & Rio Lobo.
However so many other good ones: The Son’s of Katie Elder, The War Wagon, Big Jake etc. It always cracked me up that he made sure to find some work for his friends such as Bruce Cabot, Paul Fix, Harry Carey Jr., Ward Bond etc.
And The Shootist was so full of wise metaphors, such a fitting final movie.
There were many actors that refused to work with John Wayne because they
didn’t like his ultra conservative views. Kathrine Hepburn said she couldn’t
stand him until they worked together on the set of Rooster Cogburn. She
said she was fascinated by his charming personality, and found him to be
terribly funny. John Wayne said he admired her strong personality and wit,
and her professionalism as an actress.
thanks all, good list to run through.

The Speeding Ticket
A police officer pulls over an elderly man and says, “Sir, do you know you were going 60 miles per hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone?” The man says, “Oh, I’m so sorry, officer. I have to get home quickly before I forget where I’m going!”
Among the things I really miss about California is the weather, because I truly hate winter. Yesterday’s snow has done a great job of retaining all of last night’s freezing rain, turning everything into a massive sheet of ice. It’s gone from being a winter wonderland to a hellish icescape. We have several branches down, including one large one, but many of our neighbors have large trees down. My son helped me get the sheets of ice off of the outside steps, although we’re still getting a rain/ice/snow mixture. After the sun goes down, the temperatures will fall into the single digits.
But on a positive note, we are safe, warm, and dry inside. The refrigerator and pantry are well-stocked, and we had a fine pancake breakfast this morning. The generator has been running since about 8 this morning, with no indication of when power will be restored. And the fireplaces are adding extra warmth when we come in from the cold. And as a bonus, my son cleared a path so my wife can top-off the bird feeders.
Cowellian, hang in there with the cold weather. My parents grew up in the Midwest, and when my brothers and I would mention how cold we were growing up in the Bay Area, needless to say my parents didn’t want to hear it, especially my dad. At least we had enough common sense not to mention we were “cold” when we lived in San Diego…
My brother had a downed tree removed that was blocking his gate only to find out the gate was frozen shut. He is not far from you. Lots of downed trees in his yard.
Good morning from a frozen Middle Tennessee.
As of 8:00 this morning, the temperature was up to 10° on its way to an expected high of 18°. Our generator has been running for over 24 hours with no estimate of when power should be restored. All of our neighbors have fireplaces, but we’re the only house with a whole-house generator. So yesterday, we invited the little girls from next door to come over to help bake bread (and watch a few cartoons).
It is bitter cold today, but the sun is out, and that should help with the icy surfaces. And I have no place I need to go.
