QUESTION: When out-of-staters think of California, they most likely think of beaches and surfers. What’s the first thing you think of when you hear about other states? (you pick a state)

I’ve seen a whole lot of the country…doing 65+…. but I never made it into the deep Bayous of the South… or the Everglades. Kinda wish I had gone swamp boatin’ when I was younger and hardier.

When vacationing in any state, we think of the weather and what there is to see and do. We haven’t been to Alaska, which would be cool, depending on the month.

Alaska is interesting as the coast is warmed by the Kuroshio Current or Japan Current which is much like the Gulf stream in the Atlantic ocean. It’s short sleeve weather most of the year. Today it’s in the 40s to 50s. The interior gets its weather from Siberia and at the moment is 5 to 15 degrees. Alaska is mostly small towns and villages. The capital, Juneau, has about 32,000 people.

If it’s a northeastern state, I think of the freezing cold. Southern states remind
me of humid and muggy weather, while the Midwest will bring tornadoes
to mind, and the Northwest makes me think of too much rain. A specific state
like Nevada makes me think of the desert, Alaska reminds me how much
I like the warm sun, and Hawaii is too isolated. For all its faults and fault lines,
California will always be my home.

Please accept my apology made on behalf of the sorry folks who would ‘down vote’ you praising your home state. I disagree with you…but thumbs up to you for your loyalty!

I want to let you know, I am not one of the thumb downers. You are entitled to your opinion and to disagree with me, and for that, I gave you a thumbs up also.

I was raised in good ol’ Concord California by my Mom from Virginia and my Grandma from West Virginia.
Grew up on good down home cooking and learned a lot about the south.
So to answer the question, I think of good southern food. Collard greens, blackeyed peas, fried chicken, and biscuits and gravy. Also, molasses and butter mixed together on the side of a dinner plate.
And lots of love and family.

AZ – hot & dry summers but beautiful desert golf courses
AK – cool – lots of gorgeous scenery & open space (which imo is great)
KY – hot & humid summers
NV – Las Vegas and hot summer deserts
TX – hot & humid summers but great BBQ brisket – yum!
…. that’s enough

Most out-of-staters I know think CA is a cesspool of degenerates and communists.
When I think of other states, I think of more freedoms, less taxes, less costly, fewer regulations.
There are fewer places in this world that can match CA for visual and sensual beauty.
The Oregon Coast is CA’s only rival for ocean living, in my humble opinion.

When out-of-staters think of California they most likely think of crazy.

I’ve always heard out of staters say California is the land of fruits and nuts.

That and GAF!

Texas (south)- Hot and humid with some crazy weather.. There is only a few days a year you can feel comfortable to BBQ outside but when you do watch out for the fire ants.

That’s not really true. Yes, it gets hot, but you learn to deal with it. It also gets cold, sometimes very cold. I BBQ outside year-round regardless of the temperature, and I’m comfortable doing it. In almost 10 years, I’ve never been bitten by fire ants.

The only real advantage California has over Texas is the scenery and the weather.

Hurricanes/Tornados-Weather. North Carolina. I’m thankful I live here.

I’ve been to 42 states so far. Picking one: Washington. Beautiful, green, lots of rain and overcast gray days (which is why it’s so green), too little sunshine and politics as crazy as California. Born and raised and lived my whole life in the Bay Area and I don’t think I’ll ever leave.
