A man was killed and three juveniles were badly injured in Oakley on Tuesday morning when a car involved in a high-speed pursuit by law enforcement crashed into another vehicle.

Just before 10:30 a.m., the Oakley Police Department was alerted by police in Antioch about a vehicle pursuit of an allegedly stolen Honda headed toward Oakley.

An Oakley officer was stationed in the area of Main Street and Bridgehead Road, and when the Honda left Antioch and entered Oakley at a speed of approximately 80 mph, the Oakley officer initiated a pursuit.

The pursuit went down Main Street, going through the intersections of Live Oak Avenue, Big Break Road, Empire Avenue, Teakwood Avenue and Vintage Parkway, according to police. The driver of the Honda continued to speed, according to police.

As the driver of the Honda turned right onto southbound O’Hara Avenue, an Oakley police sergeant called off the chase. However, “just a few seconds” after that, the Honda collided with another vehicle at the intersection of O’Hara Avenue and Laurel Road, killing its 50-year-old driver, the city said.

The crash caused one juvenile occupant of the Honda to be ejected from the car. Two more juveniles remained inside the car, and all three were taken to a hospital with major injuries.

A second vehicle was also struck by the stolen Honda incidental to the major collision, according to police.

“This is a tragic incident,” said the city in a Tuesday evening news release. “The city of Oakley extends its deepest sympathies to the family and loved ones of the driver who lost his life in this senseless incident.”

The Oakley Police Department is conducting a parallel investigation with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and the California Highway Patrol as per the Contra Costa County Law Enforcement Fatal Incident Protocol, police said.

High speed chases by the police aren’t worth the risk to the public, especially when we now have other means available to follow and stop cars.

Sorry, but “other means” are not always available. BTW didn’t you read that the chase was called off, then they crashed.

Fed Up,
.
Well, bless your heart, you believe the government when the government speaks.
.
I did read that the collision occurred “just a few seconds” after the pursuit was called off, but that doesn’t make it true, does it? The government never gives the public inaccurate information, right? I’ll wait until the investigations are completed to see if what we’re being told is accurate.
.
The only thing this high-speed pursuit has resulted in is the death of an innocent man and will get the City of Oakley a lawsuit. You obviously believe that an “allegedly stolen car” is worth a high-speed pursuit, the death of an innocent man, damage to the property of another innocent individual, and a lawsuit that the residents of the City of Oakley will pay for. I don’t believe a high-speed pursuit for an “allegedly stolen car” is worth these costs.

You are right… but it starts in the home and with holding thugs like this accountable. People die every die across this country without this kind of scrutiny and these monsters are responosible for the outcome directly due to their decisions pure and simple. The police wouldn’t have had to chase had these animals been raised better and they were held accountable before the tragedy, guarantee this wasn’t their first felonious criminal act. The police and their actions are hardly the problem…

bddp,
.
I never said anything about the individuals in the “allegedly stolen car.” I mearly stated that high-speed pursuits aren’t worth the risk to the public. You stated, “The police wouldn’t have had to chase had these animals been raised better and they were held accountable before the tragedy…” The Antioch Police and the Oakley Police never HAD to engage in a high-speed police pursuit with these individuals, that was a CHOICE made by employees of these departments, and it was a bad choice. It only put numerous innocent members of the public at risk, resulting in the death of an innocent man, property damage of innocent individuals, and an “allegedly stolen car” simply isn’t worth the risk to the public. This incident cost a man his life and will cost the people of the City of Oakley quite a bit of money. High-speed pursuits have been a problem all over the country resulting in the deaths of innocent people. You seem to believe an “allegedly stolen car” is worth someone’s elses life, and I don’t believe that.

Juveniles or not, give them all life in prison! Oh let me guess, they were “good boys” who were going to be doctors and lawyers? I’m willing to bet they will go on committing crimes as adults and continue to be a drain on society.

If those 3 juveniles succumb to their injuries it would probably save us a lot of trouble in the future. In an unrelated story a man was found dead from a gunshot on Dutch Slough Rd. in the Oakley area Monday night.

RIP to the unfortunate 50 year old man wrong place at the wrong time. It is entirely on the kids, they chose to steal a car then they decided to initiate a high speed chase which resulted in a death directly due to their actions. Hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law, they are already on the books for vehicular manslaughter, felony car theft and running from the police. That is a lot of bad decisions in one incident not much redemption here…

Man and three Juveniles act stupid in a stolen car and kill an innocent 50 year old. Sad.

Those thugs are from Oakland/Antioch, live in their parents apartment with no responsibilities, love to steal, beat girls, take drugs, and live the “thug life”. Their parents are probably shoplifters.
