A new long-range plan for the Bay Area predicts major shifts over the next 25 years, including continued remote work, less demand for office space, more autonomous vehicles and about two feet of sea-level rise.
Plan Bay Area 2050+, released by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Association of Bay Area Governments, suggests the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are still reshaping the region. Daily transit ridership, which was around 2 million trips before the pandemic, has dropped to roughly 250,000.
The report says remote work remains a major factor. Nearly 27% of the Bay Area workforce worked from home in 2023, compared with 11% in 2011, contributing to rising commercial vacancies.
The plan outlines strategies the region could pursue by 2050 to build more housing, shorten commute times and revitalize downtown areas. Proposed actions include expanding transit service, modernizing and widening freeways, and preserving housing at all price levels, particularly affordable housing.
Other proposals include stronger renter protections, implementing a statewide guaranteed income and allowing more flexible land uses and higher-density development.
The plan is scheduled to be presented at a joint meeting of the MTC Planning Committee and the ABAG Administrative Committee on March 13.
Once again, It is no longer 1925 where we are waiting for a ship to come in……………….Zero Reason to work in San Francisco!
Less Government dependence should be Our vision of the future.
The only problem is that some people can’t work on their own at home. I had to bring on site my remote workers back in the 1990s, They just couldn’t get motivated. Artists and musicians work solitary on developing their craft so comfortable with remote work and are productive.
No thank you their “vision” most certainly is not mine and nor do I want any part of it!
Oh and sane people stopped listening to Al Gore decades ago. 🤣
We were decisively on our way to remote work until the mayors of the big cities saw the office vacancies during covid and cried to Newsom – for example – and began the forcing of employees back to the office. The business saw their stranded assets and smaller businesses saw their sales plummet …. that’s the major reason for the return to the office – the work was getting done and employees were happier, better home / work balance, less transportation costs (gas, BART fares, etc.)… the politicos didn’t have the chutzpah to deal with it imo
Glad I won’t be around in 25 years!
I hear that! Scared soft people that want to stay inside all day! We won’t be supplementing their existence any longer…
You don’t believe in reincarnation?
Man you’re coming back whether you want to or not!
Nope this was my last go at it, I have been re-incarnated several times already, once a snail, once as a tradigrade, several stabs at a dodo bird and now finally the final form…
Where the heck did they get two feet? fake news from climate zelics, like a bad religion… all full of bu!!s#it.

I don’t believe anything that comes from these unelected and unaccountable government employees. The MTC and ABAG are expensive worthless regional government organizations which should be disbanded. These regional agencies have their own agenda, and their agenda isn’t my agenda.
Most business will be driven out. The only rising sea will be the state’s sea of debt.
Very astute, 100% spot on & absolutely hilarious!!!
