Contra Costa Fire Expands Fleet With Third Traffic Safety Unit To Protect Crews On Freeways

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District has expanded its fleet of Traffic Safety Units, now placing three of the specialized vehicles into service to enhance safety for first responders.

The Traffic Safety Units are designed to protect firefighters and other emergency personnel when responding to incidents along busy roadways and freeways. By helping manage traffic flow, improving visibility, and creating a safer work zone, the units aim to reduce the risk of secondary accidents and injuries at emergency scenes.

Each unit is equipped with advanced safety features, including a scorpion attenuator to absorb impacts from errant vehicles, directional arrow lighting to guide traffic, a digital message board, and multiple onboard cameras to assist with situational awareness.

Fire officials say the addition of a third unit marks a continued investment in responder safety as crews frequently operate in high-risk traffic environments.
