A coalition of community groups in Oakland has launched a campaign to raise the minimum wage to $30 an hour in Alameda County. The “Living Wage For All” initiative aims to address the rising cost of living, with organizers planning to place measures on the November 2026 ballot.
The proposal would require large corporations to reach the $30 wage by 2030, with smaller businesses given more time. Supporters say nearly 40% of workers in the county earn less than $30 an hour and argue the increase is urgently needed.
Heck why not $50 or $100?
$300 an hour, a living wage for all! Supporters say nearly 90% of workers in the county earn less than $300 an hour and argue the increase is urgently needed.
Start their own Somalia day care or hospice.
As long as they vote democrat there should not be
an issue.
idiot children
…if they win this one, they’ll still be whining- and still not understanding why- they still cannot
afford to buy a home of their own. And then be confused about why they are out of work and
the building is boarded up…and the price of camping tents and a short-snort are also out of their
price range.
Will they ever learn? What kind of economics classes did they take? None probably. Just dumb ideological ideas. More likely the US economy, which is unsustainable, will collapse and bring the standard of living down to about 1/3 it is now, inline with other countries and affordable living for all.
.
This was well explained years ago in an YouTube video I saw on the “rule of rent”. It’s probably been banished by now. We here in this county have seen the disaster that the “good hearten, well intended” idea of raising the minimum wage has created.
No way! The current min wage for sf is about 20/hr (which is already high). If it is allows to grow at 4% (cola) /year for the next four years, it would be at around $24/hr. 30$/hr is just too much.
The Fastact was passed barely a year and a half ago and the businesses closed in droves. These fools are literally cutting their own throats and hastening the onset of automation especially in low end paying jobs. Stupid is as stupid does…run Forrest run!!!
A long time family friend owned a burger joint in Claycord. He retired at 80 but owned the joint for 40 years. He always said a burger, fries and drink will always be the price of minimum wage. That has held true since he told me 30 years ago. Only two winners, the sales taxes and the state income taxes.
This is absurd. Minimum wage is something you should be earning as a kid, and if you’re earning minimum wage as an adult, you might want to take ask yourself why.
Exactly it’s called career choices. Fast food restuarants were never ever designed to sustain or support a family. It was and always will be a supplemental income. There is even less skill these days so the hourly wage should refelct that as well! There is hardly any markup and now a small business owner is supposed to stay in business just to pay some uneducated unskilled employee but screw his American dream right?
My brother and his high school buddy worked a small town burger stand (this was early 1950s). My brother went to build several businesses including some popular restaurants. His buddy became a VP at McDonald’s.
This will make more people lose their jobs and make robotics more popular in restaurants. I can envision AI taking your order at the drive-through
economics 101…. Idiots. doesn’t matter how much you raise it, the ends will always move to match the cost. The people it will damage will be the older ones that are on fixed wages. I love the “The “Living Wage For All” initiative aims to address the rising cost of living”. The cost of living rises because things cost more…when you pay people more for the same thing it makes the thing cost more…f#@king genius.
Looks like a lot of today’s politicians have dementia. They aren’t living in our world. So when I read proposals like these you wonder what world they are living in. Anything to avoid dealing with the real problems at hand.
.
I also read that dementia is now afflicting the younger age group. It’s like were surrounded by sleepwalkers.
The only winners in this scenario are the Dem politicians.
The minimum wage workers see this as a windfall for themselves. A huge raise without having to do anything! Apparently, they see themselves as having irreplaceable burger flipping skills. In reality, they will be unemployed.
But this is a win for the Dem politician. They get the delusional minimum wager to vote for them while their delivery job exists. Later they get the out-of-work ex-employees to vote for them because they need more EBT money.
Minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage. It is in place to
incentivize workers to develop job skills an employer is willing to pay
up for. These days blue collar trades can provide a living wage if
workers skill level is sufficient.
.
Dig down far enough you’ll find unions representing low skill service
workers out for new members and willing politicians expectant of
larger campaign contributions.
.
As has been proven by farm workers and fast food workers,
sure way to reduce worker numbers is for government to
mandate higher wages. Automation to replace workers has
gotten a boost from government mandated wage increases.
.
Employers often respond by reducing number of workers,
their work hours and possibly operating hours. Years ago,
I believe it was seattle upped minimum wage. Strange thing
happened, employees asked for fewer hours of work, turned
out higher wages caused them to get reduced welfare benefits.
.
Funny thing that minimum wage increase, costs of
daycare go up. Businesses increase price of goods
and services to offset increased wage cost. Wage
increase, is largely negated thru higher cost of living.
Especially hard hit are retirees on a fixed income.
.
Need to remember politicians are out for campaign
contributions and name recognition to increase
chances of being elected.
… if it would get approved….. it will spread… and can you imagine the inflation that follows?1 that’s crazy!
The increase in minimum wage will lead to an increase of living expenses, no longer being a living wage, leading to the need for another increase in the minimum wage, leading to another increase in living expenses. a vicious cycle. and living wage? what a stupid term, something I would hear bernie or his dim puppy dog cortez spouting.
Does no one get that raising minimum wage will increase the amount of money a business owner will need to the pay the employees, thereby increasing the cost of the product to you?
There is no free lunch-The higher minimum wage will just increase the cost of everything, defeating the purpose of the higher wage.. And be sure not to vote on any sales tax increase..
