The Walnut Creek Police Department says proactive patrol work by one of its officers led to the recovery of several illegal weapons and multiple arrests.
According to police, Officer Young was patrolling near a retail shopping area when he noticed a suspicious vehicle parked in a lot. As he approached, he saw a firearm magazine in plain view, prompting him to detain the occupants. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered an unregistered, loaded handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine.
The driver, identified as 29-year-old Bryant Payne, was found to be a convicted felon with prior weapons-related offenses. He and a passenger were both taken into custody.
In a separate incident, Officer Young conducted a traffic stop and contacted 36-year-old Juan Cortez-Lopez. During the stop, the officer discovered Cortez-Lopez was in possession of brass knuckles and a billy club, both illegal to carry in California. He was arrested at the scene.
Police say both cases highlight the importance of proactive patrols in identifying illegal activity and removing dangerous weapons from the community.
A convicted felon with prior weapons-related offense in possession of a gun! So many on the streets that should not be.

“Near a retail shopping area”.
That narrows it down.
“…was found to be a convicted felon with prior weapons-related offenses.”.
