The parents of a teen who was severely injured after crashing his electronic motorbike have been charged with misdemeanor child abuse, according to the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office.
Steven Leroy Crews, 58, and Jeanna Marie Gabellini, 58, are scheduled to be arraigned on one count each of child abuse in Contra Costa County Superior Court in Martinez Friday morning.
The charges stem from a Sept. 18, 2025 collision in which their son allegedly crashed his Surron Light Bee e-Moto bike into a minivan on Treat Boulevard and Arkell Road in Walnut Creek, according to prosecutors.
The teen was allegedly unlicensed and riding “in an unsafe manner and at unsafe speeds” prior to the collision.
He suffered severe injuries and required emergency care, prosecutors said in a news release Thursday.
“Mr. Crews and Ms. Gabellini are alleged to have willfully and unlawfully permitted a child to be injured or placed in a situation where the child’s health is endangered,” prosecutors said.
The pair allegedly allowed the boy to ride the bike from age 14 to 17 and ignored repeated citations and warnings from police.
I was calling these accidents 2 years ago, e bikes and scooters should be outlawed!!!!!
You should outlaw walking, eating and swimming too…. might die doing ANY ONE OF THOSE ACTIVITIES, I ride mine every day… come say something to me
I get both sides and you know the “Karen’s” will take it to the extreme. Riders just need to keep in mind others safety. Surron style bikes need m1 laws attached to them.
Anti ebike legislation is meant to punish the poor and reduce social and literal mobility for those who cannot afford a car. People will always find a way to harm themselves and lots of people get KIA on normal bicycles, sadly.
hmmmm .” ignored repeated citations and warnings from police.” when? to who? how? … some unanswered questions here
To them, which is why they were charged. Did ya miss that part?
to the parents? to the kid? not clear
We have gone full retard here. My parents would have been under the jail (and all my friends parents as well) for the stupid things we did as teenagers with our parents knowing full well of our actions. 14-17? so he was 17 when the injury took place? I was driving my second car at 17 having crashed the one my parents let me have. Not the parents fault the kid was being reckless.
This is an interesting one. Will it stick?
Probably not, but it will waste a bunch of their time and money.
I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a kid on an electric “moto” style bike riding safely.
I saw three of them terrorizing an old lady in her car. They were slowing her down by swerving back and forth in front of her while hollering and laughing at her. She was scared to death.
They ride like fools because it’s what the cool kids do.
Soooooooo, this gets a response from Becton, but not the rampant theft, not the assaults, and not the future Dr’s and engineers who have committed (sorry, allegedly committed) felonies.
Kid was unsafe, kid learned (or will learn) his lesson. Parents already have the financial fallout and their kid is hurt…why make it worse
Also – Becton, we remember you hosting parties during lockdown, flagrantly thumbing your nose at the draconian laws you forced upon regular citizens. You are a snake, and I can’t wait for you to be put in your place.
I witnessed an out of control kid on his e bike and I rolled down my window and yelled,” You better be careful or you won’t live long.”….
I bet it was him.
e bikes should be banned
Next time yell, “Hey Gump, go Forrest go!”
First thing is first.
So, public welfare representatives took the time to call to the attention of these repeated safety concerning incidents AND they ignored them all?
I agree with you. The original “selfish” generation opining about this is laughable. It’s 10 “o” clock, do you know where your kid is?
Gen X here – raised on hose water and neglect.
