Quick Cancel: California Renames César Chávez Day Within A Week Of Sexual Abuse Allegations

Just one week after allegations of sexual abuse surfaced against labor leader César Chávez, California lawmakers unanimously approved a bill Thursday to rename César Chávez Day as “Farmworkers Day.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom quickly signed Assembly Bill 2156 into law, making the change effective immediately ahead of the March 31 holiday. The Senate passed the measure 37-0 after unanimous approval in the Assembly earlier in the week.

Lawmakers said the change reflects a broader effort to honor farmworkers while responding to the recent allegations, which stem from a New York Times investigation into Chávez’s conduct during his leadership of the United Farm Workers in the 1960s and 1970s.

The vote comes amid a growing statewide and national reassessment of Chávez’s legacy. Several California cities are considering or have begun removing his name from public spaces, while schools and institutions are reviewing how he is represented in educational materials.

Chávez, who died in 1993, was long recognized for organizing farmworkers and advocating for improved wages and working conditions.

And rightfully so. And anyone with an ounce of decency knows this. I’m not the least bit surprised the Senate and Assembly passed this unanimously. This has nothing to do with politics. A sexual predator who abused women and children, and society knows this. Chavez destroyed his own legacy. I believe everything in his name will be removed or they’ll face serious backlash.

Allegations!!! nobody knows squat, hard to believe allegations decades later. This kind of witch hunt should have ended with the Salem Witch trials!

Yes. Exactly.

I believe in the system of innocent until proven guilty. Not the ‘it was on TV and on the iPhone too so it must be true’ system of belief.

Yes!

Dozens of streets, government buildings AND double dozens of K-12 Schools, across the Country.
Guess who will pay now to change all those signs, memorials, etc.

Agreed, and thankfully so, there is no reason to celebrate any man who abuses others – no matter what good works they do.

There is no proof these are unfounded accusations and nothing more. There should never ever be a reason to celebrate any man or WOMAN who is abusive but to accept baseless decade old accusations as truth is just idiocy!

Maybe, but it is fun to watch the left eat its own.

Oh how our heroes fall… next they will be throwing rocks at MLK.
“another statue coming down in a town near you” (great lyrics)
maybe we shouldn’t put people on such a high horse knowing they will fall. just the opinion of a grouchy old man.

If the California State Legislature was going to change the name of “Ceasar Chavez Day,” then they should’ve also changed the date that “Farmworkers Day” is celebrated so that it no longer falls on the birthday of Ceasar Chavez.
.
This also shows how fast our government can actually work and get something done when they actually desire to do something.

Our local and state government is straight feces smeared on the asphalt just look at SF! All of our problems begin and end with local and state leadershi(t)p. This does nothing for the myraid of issues that actually affect daily lives in Contra Costa County or the state of California, just another stale fart in the wind saying look at me I’m so virtuous and better than YOU!!!

Cesar Chavez Street in San Francisco should revert to Army Street.

What going to happen if the allegations turn out to be false? A big push to make him a hero again? Not everyone immediately believes everything they hear and or have been told by others.

It will still and always be “CESAR CHAVEZ DAY” MARCH 31st mark your calendars…
Cant go back in time and prosecute him… insane to damage his legacy after all he did to help the farming community… Allegations… innocent until proven guilty… people make up stories all the time to be relevant.. lets just believe everything we hear…. OK CLOWN
