The Oakley Police Department is investigating a possible accidental shooting of a 5-year-old boy that took place Sunday night.

Officers were called to the 1700 block of Hemlock Court after learning that a man had accidentally shot himself while cleaning his guns.

On the way, the report was updated to reflect that the victim was the man’s son.

The boy was shot in the chest and transported to a hospital, and is expected to make a full recovery following surgery, Oakley Police Department officials said in a news release Monday.

The boy’s father was cooperative and told police that he accidentally pulled the trigger while retrieving his AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle to clean it. He claimed that he did not know that the gun was loaded.

The boy was shot at close range, but it was a grazing wound, according to police.

Officers removed all firearms from the residence and are investigating the shooting further.

At this time, police believe that there was no ill intent behind the shooting.
