A major upgrade could soon be coming to the Concord Pavilion, and it’s aimed at solving one of the venue’s biggest complaints: the summer heat.
According to preliminary plans circulating among city officials and venue partners, a retractable roof system is being proposed that would allow the Pavilion to quickly transition from an open-air amphitheater to a fully shaded, partially climate-controlled venue during extreme heat events.
The concept design includes a series of lightweight, steel-framed panels fitted with heat-reflective material that would extend over the lawn and seating areas. Officials say the roof could be deployed in under 12 minutes, providing immediate relief during triple-digit temperatures that have become increasingly common in recent summers.
“This would be a game-changer for both fans and performers,” one source familiar with the proposal said. “Artists have raised concerns about equipment overheating, and concertgoers have been dealing with uncomfortable conditions for years.”
In addition to the retractable roof, the proposal outlines several complementary upgrades:
- High-capacity misting systems installed throughout the lawn area
- Solar panels integrated into the roof structure to offset energy use
- Upgraded ventilation fans designed to circulate air without disrupting acoustics
- Expanded shaded concession areas
Early cost estimates for the project are said to be in the range of $85–$110 million, with funding potentially coming from a mix of private investment, naming rights partnerships, and regional climate adaptation grants.
City leaders have not formally approved the project, but discussions are reportedly underway as the Bay Area continues to look for ways to adapt outdoor venues to rising temperatures.
If approved, construction could begin as early as late 2026, with the goal of having the system operational for the 2028 concert season.
Nice idea, but I am not sure it would draw any better artist. It seems like the artist like the bigger venues. I wonder how shoreline it deals with the heat. It seems to get warmer there. They are set up along the same lines as the Concord pavilion.
April Fools
The climate change grants part really got me, April Fools!
Broadway Plaza needs to protect peoplefrom the sun. When they did the remodel they really messed up and made it undesirable to shop there….. Let alone all high end crap.
Since we’re becoming an Arizona climate, good idea.
Ahhh Arizona will be moving there soon! Can’t wait!!!
Mission Church is having their Easter service there this Sunday. It is open and free to all to join! Amazing church in Walnut Creek. The lawn will be open for families with children or for anyone who doesn’t want to get too close 🙂 Doors open at 9am and service starts at 10am.
Up until the downtown Concord USL Stadium project was dropped by developer Mark Hall in 2020, some members of the Concord City Council openly discussed the soccer stadium and proposed convention center as replacements for the Concord Pavilion, and wanted to tear down the Pavilion to build housing on the site. Now, a successor incarnation of the Concord City Council wants to consider an $85 – $110 million retractable roof for the same Pavilion, with funding for the project “POTENTIALLY coming from a mix of private investment, naming rights partnerships, and regional climate adaptation grants,” not guaranteed funding! If these potential sources don’t provide the funding will the City of Concord take out a loan to pay for this project? Does the Concord Pavilion even get enough business to justify this project? Will a retractable roof bring more acts and patrons to the Concord Pavilion? Concord hasn’t been dealing with triple digit temperatures in recent years, but for many decades, if not longer.
Upgrade will increase ticket prices by 90%.
