Yes and yes. Depend on how I feel about going back to work. Most of the time, I don’t want to go back to work so I take advantage of the severance package and UI and take a month vacation before the next role.

Paul,
.
You’re again showing us all exactly who you are. Trying to generate anger with your comment in order to elicit an anger filled response.

In my lifetime, I’ve been laid off, and I’ve been fired. Not a big deal,
when one door closes, another door opens. Sometimes it can be a
blessing in disguise because better opportunities lie ahead. I ended
up finding a much better job with a much better employer. When I was
in my 20s I took the opportunity to travel and see some of the United States.

Yes was laid off from a job, was given two weeks severance… no explanation other than saying it’s not working out. (despite my clients being the loyalest and raving to the employer about how great I was and that’s why they kept doing business with us) Ended up going through a very dismal period of unemployment for almost a year, feeling totally rejected … but then got a much job that has been a blessing ever since! ( so anyone going through Unemployment please keep your chin up and know that the best may be ahead!)

Yup in 2022 thanks to Biden’s oil spike. Now thanks to Trumps pointless oil spike it’s likely I will get laid off this year again if things don’t calm down.

Probably want to look for a better field of employment because the one you currently have depends on the government feeding or starving you! People pay for their choices all the time and you are no different!

I’ve never been laid off or fired. As I look back, I’ve probably beat an employer or two to the door. I have a strong work ethic, but being laid off or fired happens. As long as you don’t get fired everywhere you go! I’m in my 60s and “you’re too old to work here” crosses my mind, but it hasn’t happened. Yet. Severance pay is very professional, and employees deserve it.

I hear that, make yourself valuable and they will find a reason to keep you.

Yes. I got laid off in 1994 after 14 years in Fleet Management at PG&E.I got 1 and 1/2 year severance$$
I used it to start my own Diesel Smoke Testing business that lasted for 17 years until selling the business and fully retiring in 2017. No regrets!

I used to do computer maintenance for a federal contractor at many government facilities in Northern California. After BRAC closed most of the military establishments in California, the company no longer needed my specialized expertise. So, I found myself laid off with six weeks of severance pay. I decided it was time for a complete career change, but I still spent over a year-and-a-half doing whatever jobs I could find, until I finally landed the job that I eventually retired from (at the age of 59.)

I have been laid off only 2 times. I received severance in the form of a paycheck for 6 months for the first time I was laid off and found a job within 3 months. This was years ago, when I had a mortgage and a 1-year-old. The last time was a few years back. I got the equivalent of 4 months of pay (as a bolus). It took me about 5-6 months to find a new job, though I turned down a few holding out for better pay. This was easier, as my youngest was at least 20, and no mortgage.

I have never been laid off or been without a job. I got my first part time job 2 months after I turned 16 and worked there for until I got engaged while in college, so I got a different part time job that paid more. I got married before I graduated (my wife was also a full time student and worked part time). I graduated when the job market was very bad for aerospace engineers, but I got hired 2 months before I graduated, took a week off and worked for 35 years as an aerospace engineer and engineering manager. After 34 1/2 years, I got hired as an adjunct professor at the university where I got my undergrad degree and did both for about 6 months. I decided to retire from my full time job and teach for a few years, which I’m still doing (after more than a few years) and still enjoying it.

Our company was purchased by a large financial institution we all know. As expected, the initial meeting with them went, “Nobody needs to worry, jobs for everyone, just look at our website!”. Utter nonsense.
Here is what’s worse than being laid off: They offer you a job, as a way of avoiding large severance for senior employees. It will be a lesser job, salary with no financial incentives, and a one year contract so they can be rid of you shortly.
I got my lawyer involved and he was able to irrefutably articulate the job offer was not commensurate with my current one. Further, he was able to negotiate my severance to be paid out over a year as “salary continuation” thereby avoiding the tax hit.
Get your lawyer involved early, as the corporate guys will never, ever, look out for you. To them, you are just a box on a spreadsheet.

No always held a Job and worked even Durning the plandemic. No extra pay! Left for a few months for maternity leave and right back to work after 3 months. never ending cycle
