Gas prices in California continue to rise alongside the national average, which has now surpassed $4 per gallon for the first time since August 2022.
The statewide average for regular gas increased five cents over the past week to $5.89 – about $1.01 higher than this time last year. Nationally, prices rose 10 cents to $4.08 per gallon.
AAA attributes the increase in part to rising crude oil prices, which have climbed above $100 per barrel amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Similar conditions in 2022 kept gas prices elevated for several months, with the national average peaking at $5 per gallon in June of that year.
Prices vary across California, with some of the highest averages in the Bay Area:
- San Francisco: $6.06
- Contra Costa: $5.93
- Oakland: $5.92
- San Jose: $5.88
- Sacramento: $5.77
- Fresno: $5.79
- Stockton: $5.70
Meanwhile, new data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows gasoline demand declined slightly last week, while both supply and production also saw modest decreases.
It’s interesting, the other day I was in the gas station filling up and a woman was complaining about the cost, and blaming Pres.Trump. I reminded her that the gas prices were thise high before, for numerous years under Buden administration.. and asked if she was upset then? Couldn’t answer.
Oil spiked in 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. It’s almost like war and the associated supply disruptions hurt Americans.
The Biden Administration ban on Russia oil imports caused record fuel prices in the U.S.
That ban is still in effect. Why did oil come back down if that’s the cause? How did Biden spike Brent crude oil prices globally? The answer – it wasn’t his fault. It was the war.
That would be due to the Biden Syndicate requesting the largest ever release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
Wait, tapping the SPR raises prices? So when Trump started tapping the SPR a few weeks ago you’re telling me that he’s actually raising prices by doing this? I’m no economist but I don’t think more supply = higher prices.
Read the discussion thread again and it should clear things up.
JimH,
.
The Russian-Ukrainian War is still ongoing, so why did prices fall if the the rise in prices was caused by the war?
Shifting of supply routes & new supply coming online. Europe banned Russian oil causing massive shortages and price hikes. Russia reroutes oil to China and India. New sources from Brazil & Canada. US increased production – we produce 15% more now than in 2022. Biden SPR releases helped as well. All this stuff takes time to work out. But this Hormuz situation is a completely different animal – much, much worse than the 2022 situation.

What do you believe caused California gas prices to rise above and remain over $4.000 per gallon beginning in May of 2021. Five years of above $4.000 per gallon. I do miss that $0.990 per gallon gas that we had the last part of 1998 and beginning of 1999.
Wew lad. The level of copium going on here is off the charts.
Badge1104,
.
California average gas prices have consistently been above $4.000 per gallon since May of 2021, where the average price was $4.068 per gallon, average California gas prices haven’t fallen below that price since. We saw spikes above $5.000 per gallon from March of 2022 through November of 2022, reaching $5.905 per gallon in October of 2022, August of 2023 through October of 2023, reaching $5.546 per gallon in October of 2023, April of 2024 through May of 2024, reaching $5.255 per gallon in April of 2024, and March of 2026, reaching $5.379 per gallon. We saw a spike above $6.000 per gallon in June of 2022, reaching $6.294 per gallon.
so what you are saying is that when Biden was president, the high gas prices were his fault. But now that your orange daddy is in office the gas prices are NOT the presidents fault, do I have that right?
Are you tired of winning yet?
Gas is up, groceries are up, we are in an unprovoked war, the Epstein files still have not been released, Mexico still has not paid for the wall, it is still called the Gulf of Mexico and on and on and on……
Thanks Newsom! Went do they start providing electric cars for working families to prevent this ongoing climate crisis and to protect vulnerable communities?
They won’t.
For without vulnerable communities, they won’t have anything to champion, and pilfer.
Therefore any real help, that might make vulnerable communities less vulnerable, will never happen.
They need vulnerable communities more than vulnerable communities need them.
See also “money laundering”, and ‘righteous indignation”.
Make sure to send a special thank-you note to Gavin Newsom and CARB.
Tell me more about how Trump will lower our costs…. we’re getting screwed by our own Gov and nobody cares. VOTE BLUE
That would appear to be the case, Concerned Citizen……that we’re getting screwed by our own Gov Newsom. When Trump was running for president, he said it would take a couple of years to really turn things around. Now you know how badly the last administration messed up, and so my advice to you is to be a little more patient. Your “Vote Blue” only advocates for open borders and no voter i.d.
Whose talking about open borders and no voter i.d.? The question was about the price of gas. Who sets the prices of gas BTW? Not all Dems want an open border. My niece was murdered by a fentanyl overdose direct from Mexico. It’s extremely personal to me.
@concerned Citizen
This is personal to me also, and you didn’t ask a question……you said to vote blue, which is how we ended up with open borders in the first place.
Voting BLUE is what got us in the mess were in, especially in this State.
Concerned Citizen,
.
You freely admit “we’re getting screwed by our own Gov and nobody cares. VOTE BLUE” Why would you tell people to VOTE BLUE while also telling us our BLUE Governor Gavin Newsom is screwing us over?
….. just cut out the absurd CA gas taxes that don’t go to road maintenance anyway…. and stop the CA “blend” – Gavin said he would bring parity to national averages …. we wish we could get $4 / gallon
Are you people insane?
There is only one person to blame for the national average and that is trump. Lower prices on day one🤣🤣🤣
The useless war he was going to avoid is effecting the world. That’s OK it’s probably Bidens fault.
@Snakekeeper
California’s gas prices are included in that national average, and that’s not on Trump. And yes, lower prices were initiated on day one….not sure why you have those laughing emojis. It’s not useless to try to avoid getting nuked by a country that hates you. Was this the way to do it? I don’t know because I’m not privy to all the information associated with making those decisions.
During obama/ biden regime crude prices hit $122.00.
We endured 12 years of invertebrate iran policy.

Be very thankful, that community organizer isn’t president,
his position on missile defense systems, he scrapped Bush GDM
anti missile program. to only later scramble to reinstate program
when N Korea became a larger problem. Example of shallow
noncritical thinking by one with a very limited intellect.
.
Alternative:
terrorists given nuke tipped missiles ? ? ?
Or suitcase nukes, smuggled in and detonated on US soil . . . . .
Dirty bombs detonated in major US cities rendering areas uninhabitable
or detonation near large drinking source.
.
Dealing with terrorists or a state sponsor of terrorism requires
a response that MUST be, Profound and Absolute
Biden’s fault? No.
That would be the Autopen’s fault.
California average gas prices have exceeded $4.00 per gallon since May of 2021.
