We have enough prisons. Keep alcrataz a tourist and historic attraction
Actually we don’t have enough prison’s to house all the filth that our super awesome governor has let out and shuttered prison’s so HELL YEAH make it a super max prison with great white sharks circling the island constantly to make the inmates feel fuzzy and warm!
It isn’t that historic.
Prisons are just depressing.
It’s an eyesore in the middle of a beautiful setting.
Tear it down and either make it a nature preserve or build a world class hotel casino.
First, let’s see if geraldo rivera can escape . . . . . .
I pay enough taxes as is and I don’t need it to go towards a prison we don’t need.
I’m against re-commissioning the island as a prison. Not so much because of the tourist value, but because of the cost to demolish/rebuild, as well as the cost to operate. I’m sure that the motivation by the current administration is to figuratively poke a finger in Pelosi’s eye; In my view not a good enough reason to move forward with the plan.
Keep it as a historical site. Otherwise it would be another money hole to deal with.
Have no opinion one way or the other.
Anything that gets California democrat politicians veins popping out,
red faced and frothing at the mouth, I’m ALL in favor of.
Can’t get that kind of entertainment on daytime TV.
.
Pass the Popcorn, Please . . . . . . .
Click bait for the libs. something to stir them up and give them something to rage against. Totally impractical prison, was made on an old “already owned” fort as an isolation deterrent, now people know they can swim🤣Cost too much to build, maintain and run. Build a supermax in the desert.
I don’t care what they do with it, from a distance it will probably still look
the same. The US could use more federal prisons because overcrowding
leads to too many plea bargains in court, and that means some of the
mean and evil ones will be getting shorter sentences than they deserve.
Everybody is always crying about thieves and murderers getting out early,
but they don’t want to pay what it takes to house them. We can’t have it
both ways, either we pay to keep them locked up, or they get out on a plea
bargain. Operating a federal prison is chump change compared to how
much the feds spend on a lot of their useless projects that none of us will
ever benefit from.
Dawg,
.
Prosecutors engage in plea bargains to avoid the costs of having a trial.
I wasn’t talking about the cost of a trial. What I said was they will
be getting shorter sentences than they deserve, which means they
already had a trial. There are several reasons why the court will
plea bargain, and overcrowding is a big issue with federal prisons.
Make it a prison again. Also, the government should charge prisoners for their room and board. Why should honest law abiding citizens have to pay the price for incarceration of criminals? If they don’t have the money put them to work. They can fix roads, do fire abatement work, clean the streets, etc. Chain gang duty to pay their debt to society.
While we do not have nearly enough prisons, Alcatraz is better suited as a historic site.
It’s an impractical location for a prison both financially and logistically. The sharks in the bay are small and harmless to humans and many people swim from Alcatraz to the shore every year.
Alcatraz is a unique and popular historic location that’s enjoyed by tourists and locals alike and should stay that way.

“Another interesting historical note: Two shark attacks in the bay both took place before 1930 and involved people swimming near canneries. It’s probably not a coincidence sharks were drawn into the bay by those canneries”

Leave it alone. Keep it as a Historic Site.
Do people actual know the cost to reopen this as a prison? Water and everything else needs to be delivered via boats and it is in such a sorry state it’s cheaper to just build one somewhere else. Just crazy to even consider it, but then again politicians love wasting money so why not?
How much does it cost to build a new modern prison? Especially one that no one wants in their town?
It is very cost prohibitive to reopen as a prison. Restoring the integrity of buildings, plumbing and electrical and to house staff would be astronomical. It amazes me how many people don’t understand the fiscal impact of doing something like this. It would be far more fiscally prudent to acquire land an build a new facility
No- don’t reopen as a prison – way too costly – that’s why it was closed as a prison in 1969 – can you imagine the costs WE would have to pay now? They don’t even have fresh water on the island.
We have an entire train system that runs under the bay, surely we can figure out how to lay a water pipe out to the island… to the worlds most popular jet set destination the Alcatraz Island Hotel / Casino on SF Bay.
That would bring in a lot more revenue than a crumbling, ugly (very ugly) old prison as a tourist destination and will be much more attractive and impressive + no cars so no massive parking lots !
But we’d need Congressional approval to do it which is unlikely so I suppose it will remain just what it is, an ugly memorial to criminals, honoring the likes of Al Capone, “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Alvin Karpis, etc. what a pity.
Keep it as a history site. No support tonre open the alcaltraz
