On May 21, 1976, a bus carrying the Yuba City High School choir exited the Marina Vista Avenue off-ramp on southbound I-680 in Martinez, struck a guardrail, plunged from the elevated roadway, and overturned. The crash claimed the lives of 27 students and one adult advisor, while 24 others were injured. To mark the 50th anniversary of the tragedy, a remembrance ceremony will be held on May 21, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Martinez Waterfront Memorial Site, located at 7 North Court Street in Martinez.
This remains the deadlist bus crash in United States history.
