A ceremonial cultural burn rooted in Indigenous fire practices will take place Saturday, June 6, at the Cal State East Bay Concord Center in partnership with multiple local agencies and organizations.
The mak-warép Ohlone Land Conservancy, along with Cal State East Bay Concord Center, CAL FIRE, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and the Contra Costa Resource Conservation District, will conduct the burn on less than one acre of land at the campus located at 4700 Ygnacio Valley Rd. in Concord.
Organizers say the project is part of ongoing efforts to restore Indigenous-led fire stewardship practices in the East Bay while supporting the ecological health of Ohlone homelands. The cultural burn is intended to reduce invasive grasses, improve soil health and help restore native plants traditionally used for food, medicine and basketry.
Smoke may be visible in the area between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., weather and air quality permitting. The invitation-only event will begin with a private Ohlone ceremony before Ohlone firekeepers carry out the controlled burn under cultural protocols.
Fire personnel and equipment from CAL FIRE and Contra Costa County Fire will remain on-site throughout the event. Organizers emphasized that public safety is the highest priority and said the burn will only proceed under a strict approved burn plan that takes weather and fire conditions into account. Fire breaks, water supplies and suppression equipment will also be established on-site, and crews will remain until the area is fully secured.
The project qualifies as a ceremonial fire under Bay Area Air Quality Management District regulations and will only proceed on a permissive burn day. The burn will not take place during a Mandatory Burn Ban or Spare the Air Alert day.

In other words, the school couldn’t get the required burn permits to protect the campus so they went the “cultural burn” route to get the over grown weeds taken care of the cheap way instead of paying a contractor tractor fee’s.
