KGO in its prime was excellent. Ronn Owens (sad what a train wreck his life turned into), Dean Edell, Gene Burns. Amazing. Then it slowly ruined itself starting with Dr. Laura, then horror-show Gil Gross, the insufferable Nikki Medoro, and the worst of the worst Chip Franklin. Then big surprise… ratings went kerblooey and KGO was no more.
Paranoid pablito,
OK, you made me look. The Owen’s family fiasco is most unfortunate.
Back when I was working, I had KGO on all day in my office. I frequently disagreed with Ronn Owens, but I respected his opinion and enjoyed his show. I enjoyed most of the KGO daytime hosts, but my favorite was Pete Wilson. And Len Tillem was always fascinating.
I usually never listened after dark, but I did appreciate Duane Garrett. But he was in another train wreck situation. And I always thought there was something very, very, wrong with Bernie Ward. It seems that I was right.
However, since retiring, I no longer listen to any talk radio, and that suits me just fine.
I have KVHS playing right now. The older I get the less I can tolerate the “music” but it’s company noise for the bird that lives in that room. FM: 90.5 – They just came from commercial saying “KVHS Concord.”
Speaking of MDUSD… They are up and at it again. They want another Bond “to save the children”
Between 1990 and 2010 total MDUSD School Bonds were just shy of ONE BILLION DOLLARS. 2010 was $356 MILLION.
Then, what? Six or so years late they got another How Many Hundreds of Millions? Ask the perpetual. never changing, never accountable “Accountability Council” — They ask the same
questions. “Where did the money all go?” And then they hold another meeting to ask…………again.
I lost $$$ count — but I know we’re pushing our way into another half BILLION that will disappear
District says…Time for new HVAC, Drinkable water, Get rid of asbestos, Teach real RRRs. … WAIT A MINUTE… that’s where the 2010 $356 Million went..Right? (well, except for all the Solar from the now bankrupt, “Regarding that maintenance contract you paid millions for… oops, so sorry school district, but you’re on your own, now”.
KVHS and no they are sadly gone, loved KFRC back in the day with Dr. Donald D Rose!

KKIS in 1964 it was a radio station in Pittsburg California,(attenas were across the river on an Island.) The Beatles had just come to the USA. The music was all rock, surf with a lot of the new groups as well as some oldies. The DJs were fast talking(probably legal amphetamines back then), and they even broadcast sometimes from The Starlight Room Bar at Park n Shop….I was 11 years old so I never went in to see them.

I grew up listening to Dr. Don Rose and his slide whistle on KFRC. It was KFOG or KVHS while in HS. In college I listened to (and very briefly) was the sports guy at KDVS in Davis. Now its either KGO or Spotify.
When I was a kid it was KOBY and KYA. At the time, KOBY was the most
successful rock and roll station in the Bay Area, which inspired KYA and
other stations to switch to rock and roll. KYA eventually changed it format
and call letters, as did KOBY.
KMPX FM was the best for listening to the sound of San Francisco during
the Haight Ashbury days. There was very little talking or interruptions by
the DJ, and they would play whole albums without interruptions. And of
course, I listened to KGO during its heyday.

KSAN…every DJ a mastercraftsman….and Terry was the best.
Runners up; KOME…a great hard rock station with an even better moniker. KMEL…when they first went on the air & were commercial free for 30 days. KFRC & the hipper KYA. KSFO…when they used to play comedy Sunday mornings. KGO….before they were conglomorated.
KFRC 99.7 , was the best oldies station. I remember Sylvia Chacon was a jockey for a long time. I remember when I was maybe 9 or 10 (pre puberty) I called in and asked them to play Sukiyaki by Kyu Sakamoto (google it, you’ve heard it before.. it’s Japanese but was very popular in the US). They said “you got it, little girl” and hung up. They used the recording on air and then played the song.
I AM A BOY!!
Sylvia Cha Cha Chacon is still on the air, I think, in Sacramento

The Sunday Night Idiot Show on KFOG (104.5 FM) in the 1980’s and 1990’s hosted by the wild man M.Dung. Those shows were wild! Played mostly oldies and roots rock music along with M. Dungs’ screaming and shouting in the background. Old episodes are still available online. R.I.P. M.Dung.
The Quake (KQAK 99 FM) was only around for a short time from 1982 to 1985 and featured Alex Bennett in the mornings. Alex would bring in top comedians of the era both local and otherwise (Robin Williams, Bobcat, Whoopi, Dana Carvey, Will Durst, Kevin Pollak, Jay Leno, Ray Romano, Bobby Slayton, etc., etc., etc.). The Quake had lots of other DJs as well (Big Rick Stewart a.k.a. the Round Mound of Sound and Tim Bedore among others). The music was mostly new wave, punk, reggae, and ska.

When KNBR had Frank Dill and Mike Cleary..a popular radio team that worked together from 1979 to 1994. They hosted a morning show that was known for its mix of sports, news, and entertainment.
KSFO, “the world’s greatest radio station.”
I also loved the Dr. Bill Wattenburg show on KGO. Also, whatever station Rush Limbaugh was on. Back in the 60’s and 70’s, it was KSJO and KSAN for rock.
George Noory ruined Coast to Coast when he turned it into “Coast to Cornelius”.

KKHI Classical. After it went out of business it’s KDFC for me.
For news and talk it was KFBK in Sacramento because, oddly enough, that station was much clearer than KSFO in San Francisco.
I know it’s a little bit out of the Bay Area, but anyone living near Chicago in the ’60s probably listened to WLS. Art Roberts, Clark Webber, Ron Reiley. Great memories!!!

I liked KSFO with Lee Rodgers in the morning and Mark Levin in the afternoon. After Lee, I found on KSTE Armstrong and Getty, and I still listen to them, so it would be KSTE
KGO no it is not still in business, Cumulus ruined it. They had a good variety of shows my favorite was Gene Burns, he was the best, and he could really argue with the callers. Also liked John Rothmann a lot.
There were some good music stations, but I don’t remember their names. There was on host Steve Seeweed (not sure that is spelled correctly) who was good. When I lived on the Peninsula, I could get 91.1 which is a jazz station. These days I listen to KCBS for news, but there’s a lot of repeat so just for a short time. For music mostly the Eagle from Sacramento, and KFBK have a night time host I kind of like, Pat Walsh, he is a bit of lightweight, but he has a nice personality, and he often talks music, especially Rock and Roll and since music is my passion, I enjoy those shows. In the afternoon Sam Shane replace Tom Sullivan, they are both conservative, but Sam Shane is much more one sided than Tom was. Never the less, he often reads my emails even though I mostly disagree with him, so I appreciate that. Since there’s no liberal even middle of the road radio shows anymore I go to You Tube. I like the Bulwark and especially The Mark Thompson show, Mark was a host on KGO until the folded, but I think his You Tube show is better than his radio show.

Cowellian, I forgot to include Len Tillem on my “good list”. Weird but good. He died a couple of years back.

KFRC with Dr. Don Rose.
We used to love the KFRC oldies shows at the Concord Pavillion. They were always fun.
I was about to say 610 K-F-R-C San Francisco!
Kind of crazy when you think about it. Not a lot of hi-fidelity coming from a monaural AM radio station…
