California gas prices continued to ease this week, with the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline falling 10 cents to $5.97, according to AAA. Nationally, the average price dropped 18 cents to $4.24 per gallon, marking the second consecutive week of declining prices. The decrease comes as crude oil prices remain below $100 per barrel, helping to reduce pressure at the pump ahead of the busy summer travel season.
“Drivers will take all the relief they can get as they embark on summer road trips,” said AAA Mountain West Group spokesperson Doug Johnson. “But uncertainty lingers over when the Strait of Hormuz will fully reopen. That unknown means oil prices will likely not decrease dramatically as summertime gasoline demand climbs.”
Among major California cities, San Francisco recorded the highest average price at $6.16 per gallon, followed by Oakland at $6.07 and San Jose at $6.01. Sacramento averaged $5.98, while Fresno, Modesto and Stockton reported prices ranging from $5.86 to $5.96 per gallon. Meanwhile, new data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows gasoline demand declined last week, falling from 9.25 million barrels per day to 8.59 million. Domestic gasoline supplies increased from 211.6 million barrels to 215 million barrels, while gasoline production averaged 9.4 million barrels per day.

Speaking of gas: one of the worst things that Sacramento did recently was to ban gas water heaters. The ban is being rolled out gradually, but it makes all the other woke, expensive, tone deaf, corrupt, and destructive laws seem minor in comparison.
Actually I had the old gas water with a fancy schmancy electric with it’s own heat pump and there is even an app for it. Not cheap but I had a strategy in this anyway and it didn’t have anything to do with the mandate.
I had to go the tankless route in 2018 and have never been happier with a water heater.
My Navien unit is an awesome performer and eliminated sulfite odors 100%,
It barely takes up any room compared to the old tank water heater and only burns gas on demand.
I looked into tankless and actually a lot of the places in India had them back in the 1990s. However they are not recommended for solar systems.
This summer’s rotating power outages have already started, and electric cars and AI data centers are creating power grid shortages. And now we are being forced to buy electric water heaters? There will be even greater demands on the power grid. Also, many older homes, apartments, and condos will need costly electrical panel upgrades, new wiring, new permits. This is a short-sighted, poorly thought out mandate that will simply drive more people out of California.

You’re correct, military action in Iran, authorized by President Trump, has resulted in higher gas prices.

Actions taken by Governor Newsom and the California State Legislature has also resulted in higher gas prices in the state.

There’s no doubt that President Trump was sold a much easier vision of achieving U.S. military and policy goals in Iran than it’s turned out to be. It appears that taking military action in Iran was a mistake to just end up with the current stalemate. It’s unlikely that we’ll ever be able to trust the Iranians, if we ever happen to enter into an agreement or treaty with them. The moderates in the Iranian government who we would’ve preferred to deal with were killed off early into the bombing of targets in Iran.

If you were Iran and your leaders were assassinated and a few hundred of your school kids were killed and watching Trump lie daily about non-existent negotiations, would you trust the US?

I believe this is the first time I’ve commented on gas prices rising as a result of U.S. military action in Iran, but I’ve posted the context of my first two sentences before.

OK, you got me. I believe our government and a majority of our population will never be able to trust the Iranians in any agreement we may enter into with them. I also believe the current government of the Iranian Islamic Republic and the 10%-20% of the Iranian population who support the government will never trust the U.S. I find it troubling that former Vice President Mike Pence continues to make the media rounds cheerleading the current U.S. actions in Iran, which hasn’t produced much in the way of meeting U.S. objectives and policy goals. He reminds me too much of the neo-conservatives who were in the George W. Bush Administration. Unfortunately, it looks as though the U.S. will go back to bombing Iran in the near future. If we could bomb them into submission then we probably would’ve done so already. The best we’ll likely get is more dead Iranian leaders because “Shock and Awe” doesn’t work!

As I’ve stated before, I’d like to see the U.S. stop supplying the Ukranians with weapons, but if we’re not going to do that, and continue to give them just enough weaponry to maintain a stalemate, then what we should really do, is just supply them with all of the weaponry they need to make a difference in the war and bring it to an end. Either supply them with nothing or supply them with just about everything, this middle ground position we’ve taken is just pointless. Although, I believe that if any countries should be supplying the Ukrainians with weaponry, it’s the countries of Europe who should be doing much more than they’ve been doing, after all this is Europe’s war. It’s unfortunate, but President Trump has allowed officials who served in the George W. Bush Administration to get in his ear and convince him to continue supporting the war because “the tide is turning in the Ukrainians favor and President Putin is in hiding due to fears of assassination.” In fairness, the Russo-Ukranian War is more difficult for President Trump to get us out of supplying the Ukrainians with weapons, because the majority of Congress supports the war.

So your saying shutting down oil refineries due to strict environmental regulations, special fuel blends and in perpetuity gasoline tax increases contributed nothing to the problem?!?
The Phillips 66 Wilmington/Carson complex and the Valero Benicia were responsible for about 17.5% to 20% of in state oil refining. Their closures forced the state to rely heavily on international imports from places like Iraq. The 17.5 to 20% does not take into consideration diesel or jet fuel needs of the state.
California taxes add 70.9 cents per gallon of gasoline in total state taxes and fees which get adjust for inflation yearly. These addition taxes and fee will continue to go up EACH AND EVERY YEAR in perpetuity. A fancy way of say FOREVER.
Funny isn’t Yoyohop that the United States is currently the world’s largest oil and gas producer and functions as a major net exporter of total petroleum but California is importing oil from Iraq, South America and Canada.
Even before the Strait of Hormuz was blockaded, California had the highest gasoline per gallon cost in the nation. How come?!?

Look up the stats. Prices rose about 50% across the nation. So yes, we’ve been getting screwed by the state, but now we’re getting screwed by Trump too.

The average low gas price countrywide in President Trump’s second term was $2.809 in January 2026 and the high was $4.479 in May 2026 which is about a 60% increase.
Gas is still less expensive than it was during Bidenflation days.
