The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Division has identified a young woman whose identity remained unknown for several months despite extensive investigative efforts.
In May, the Coroner’s Division asked for the public’s help in identifying the woman by releasing information about the case, including a photograph of a distinctive tattoo. Following media coverage and social media posts, a social worker contacted investigators and provided information that helped lead to the woman’s identification.
After further investigation, authorities positively identified the woman as 18-year-old Layla White. Her next of kin have been notified. Officials were unable to determine her last known address.
White died on Feb. 16, 2026, after being struck by a train in Port Costa. The incident was investigated by Amtrak Police and the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Coroner’s Division, White was not carrying identification at the time of her death, and investigators were initially unable to determine her identity. The manner of death was later ruled a suicide.
