Clayton residents could soon decide whether to increase local taxes as the City Council prepares to place a general sales tax measure on the November 3, 2026 ballot. At Tuesday night’s meeting, the council is scheduled to consider a series of resolutions that would officially call for a general tax measure election, request consolidation with the statewide general election, and establish procedures for ballot arguments. The council will also appoint members to an ad hoc committee responsible for drafting arguments in support of the measure.
While city officials have not yet released details on the proposed tax rate increase in the agenda item, approval of the resolutions would formally begin the process of asking voters to decide whether to provide the city with additional revenue through a local sales tax. The proposal comes as Clayton continues to examine long-term funding needs for city services and infrastructure. Earlier this month, the City Council took steps toward extending the city’s Landscape Maintenance District and discussed future funding mechanisms to support municipal operations.
If approved by the council, the sales tax measure would appear on the November ballot, giving Clayton voters the final say on whether to increase local sales taxes to fund city programs and services. The Clayton City Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hoyer Hall in the Clayton Community Library.
I hope that doesn’t happen! The sales tax is too high already-thru out Ca. It’s the tax everyone pays– the young and old people, the rich and the poor. I live in Oregon, (after living almost 40 years in Clayton) and what a difference that sales tax makes here in Oregon- there is NO sales tax. I still have a lot of family in the Clayton area, and all the taxes are too high, sales tax and gas taxes.

If governments cannot manage the money they have, they certainly won’t be able to manage more of it. Californians getting tired of sales tax measures, as noted in the recent failers of tax measures to pass.
I think all of the recent sales tax votes have failed, thank goodness. The lone exception being in LA, where a surge in votes for Raman and the tax mysteriously appeared after election day. If politicians want to persuade voters that a tax is necessary, they need to directly link it to something they will benefit from and then allow it to be audited. Otherwise, find a couple of million in your seat cushions, cause it’s there.

“Long Term funding needs” – Translation – the bad pension payments we doled out to the likes of Gary Napper, Pete Lwarence and Julie Peirce just to name a few. – Better suggestion re-incorporate and declare those obligations null and void. You have to question the wisdom of these folks who in a related think they need to spend $140,000 on security upgrades????
Clayton needs to unclutch their pearls and revisit a resident’s idea of generating revenue, which was selling marijuana. And since Clayton recently hosted an event with major sponsors, which included grown men dressed provocatively as women hanging out with innocent little children, they can host a delivery-only, revenue-generating pot dispensary. After all, Clayton likes to do what other cities are doing.

Recently? I saw a picture of my 5 year old grand daughter joining something downtown, I thought it was a protest, and wondered what they were protesting? It was maybe 3-4 wks ago, a Fri or Sat early evening. Why would anything like that be allowed? They want to normalize deviant behavior at the expense of our children. I do hope it was just a protest she joined. (I am in Oregon, so I see a lot of pictures)

Oh-, the picture of my great grand daughter was before that, a Fri or Sat. They had been eating somewhere in down town Clayton, walked out-and saw something–she is a very active friendly little girl. So glad she missed it! My grand daughter is her mother, I forget how old I am.
