Bodie is an old ghost town. It was built in 1859 when gold was discovered
in the area and was totally abandoned by the 1940s. It’s now a historical
state park with a few park rangers living there to maintain and preserve
the wooden buildings that still have the original furniture and household
items just as they were when abandoned. Bodie is located on the eastern
side of the Sierras near the Nevada state line, and at an elevation of over
8,000 feet, it is the coldest place in California. In the winter, temperatures
can be as low as 25 degrees below zero, and in the summer when the
temps are in the 70s during the day, they can drop to 30 degrees at night.
