I’ve been an advocate for the USPS for years …. until recently …. I sent a package to NY late December.. got lost in the mail – ok, it happens. Filed a tracer with the USPS after the required interval and got status emails every other month saying the search period will take awhile, can’t file for a refund until 6 months. Each time the email saying be patient, still searching. So 6 months are up, went online to file for refund, online says cannot apply for refund online, no explanation, but you can file at a USPS branch. I go to branch first thing they tell me they can’t file for a refund do it online. I show them the printed message I got saying to file at a branch as it can’t be processed with no explanation. Then they tell me I waited too long! I show them the messages I got telling me to wait – all they do is say NO!. Talk to a supervisor, like talking to a wall. Ask for a postmaster or manager – always “not available” – they’ll call you back. Do they? NO! Repeated visits result in same. They need to clean house completely, top to bottom – or close it down.

USPS Informed delivery can be very helpful, but it can also be stress-inducing. It’s fun to watch an incoming package move from California to Nashville, and then make an unexpected side trip to Kansas City, New Jersey, or Texas, before returning to Nashville for delivery.
That happened to me with FedEx. I tracked a package from Nebraska through its various stops to Reno and thought that it would be here the next day. Nope – the next port of call was Bakersfield, where it sat for a couple of days before going to Sacramento, then here.
Perhaps you were given misinformation. When I had a lost package, I didn’t call, I did my own research online. File within sixty days and have proof of insurance or using an insured method of delivery. Otherwise, the claim will be denied. I filed and got my refund. I was prepared to get jacked around, because I’ve never been an “advocate” of any government agency. Good luck!

I recently sent a package that was delivered open and empty. I kept being told that the package was delivered so I couldn’t file a claim.

I’ve been told by USPS employees that mail and packages aren’t lost but that a great deal of them are stolen as significant theft occurs in the Oakland facility and supervisors at the Oakland facility don’t care.
It stands to reason that packages are lost and stolen. A friend of mine ordered a blouse online and it sat in Atlanta for a few years. Her mail person told her Atlanta is the “dead letter” center, and packages end up there when the address isn’t visible.
We don’t live in a perfect world, but we shouldn’t have to go through all this nonsense. Taxes and death…
Many years ago I would see broken-down cars on the side of the road, maybe with someone looking under the hood to see if they could fix the problem.
Then came electronic ignition and computer chips and the number of broken-down cars decreased because cars had become more reliable. Tow-trucks went out for lock-outs, flat tyres and accidents, not actual breakdowns.
But now the computer-chip cars are getting older and have passed through several hands and they are starting to appear on the roadside as in the old days. Only now, no amount of looking under the hood will fix them.
I just got a “shake alert” 8:11 AM on the phone for an area north of Point Reyes but I see nothing on USGS website. Anybody else know about this?
OK, it’s on the website now 5.6 between Willits and Ukiah.
