The Concord City Council has approved a request to help move forward the conversion of the Valley Motel into permanent housing for homeless people. The council approved an amendment to the city’s Homeless Strategic Plan grant agreement with Hope Solutions and agreed to waive or defer a $123,662 park land fee that had been requested by the Valley Motel project. The fee relief removes a significant financial hurdle for the development, which will convert the motel at 3590 Clayton Road into 13 permanent rental housing units.
The project is part of Concord’s broader effort to create additional permanent supportive housing by repurposing existing motel rooms rather than constructing new housing from the ground up. Hope Solutions, a nonprofit that provides housing and support services throughout Contra Costa County, is partnering on the project. City officials said the action supports the goals of Concord’s Homeless Strategic Plan by expanding the city’s supply of permanent housing for some of its most vulnerable residents. With the council’s approval, the project can move forward toward converting the former motel into long-term housing.
If you build it…they will come. And they won’t be starting as many brush fires in the exits and under bridges… I shudder to think of the maintenance and clean-up we will be paying for around there.

The homeless are homeless for a reason. They need substance abuse facilities. Well now we know where to go to buy illegal substances and stolen property. What do the Concord Police think?
How many taxpayers out there trying to save so they can buy your own home are appreciative of the city taking your hard earned money in confiscatory taxes and using that to give bums find a place to live freely? I wonder if the owner of Valley Motel negotiated a “reasonable” rate from the city for the new class of clientele, a rate higher than he could normally charge.
I don’t like City Councils getting into the housing business. Simple to get it started by giving the organization a tax break. But 2 years from now this will start consuming more of the city budget, expect bond measures to be voted on when they cry that the facility needs repairs. Do we have a Concord Workforce Strategic Plan that works to increase business and job opportunities? Can they give some potential businesses a tax break to startup a site that will create new local jobs? 13 units, not much.
Don’t laugh or make jokes, this 13 room complex is California’s way to quickly show they are help deal with the homeless problem, b4 elections and to make us think we are really moving forward in our crusade to help get people off the streets. It’s all bull crap what difference is a 13 room place gonna do for anyone except for the 13 people it helps.
