I don’t enter contests, and I don’t like to gamble, as a result my chances
of winning a prize are next to none. However, I did enter a contest once
when I was in my 20s and I won a $350.00 Sylvania 19″ color television.
The contest people thought they could pull a fast one on me, and said
they will have to order the TV, and it could take a couple of months before
I could take delivery, and offered me $50.00 instead. Naturally I declined
their offer and threatened to sue. They gave me a voucher and I went to
the nearest Sylvania dealer and picked up my new television.
$0.00 ive never won anything.
The most expensive prize I ever won was a free cruise. By the time I paid for the port fees, the mandatory gratuities, the Wi-Fi package, and the drinks… I realized ‘free’ cost me about $2,000.”

Back on the Ustafish, we had a command-sponsored anchor pool for our return to port. I won $500 in cash, but more importantly, I got two weeks of basket leave which contributed to my wedding plans.
30+ years ago, I won a bottle of Dom Perignon at a mock wedding. Only thing I ever won.
My daughter is a different story. When she was around 5, the family went to a crab feed for a friend’s little league. My kid found a raffle ticket on the floor and tried to give it back to the raffle emcee. He told her to keep it. She won the grand prize! I got to take home a gas grill and she got to eat lots of grilled meat.
When our kids were much younger, I took them shopping at Clayton Station and let them each sign up for a contest at the pet store. A month or so later we got a call that my son had won a trip to Disneyland for the family, including air fare, two nights in a hotel, a rental car, and of course, the Disneyland tickets. He was the family hero!
Several thousand dollars on my eighteenth birthday in Tahoe. In the late seventies. My parents owned a cabin in Tahoe, and they knew I was there. Along with my high school sweetheart (that they didn’t know was going) and several college bound friends. When the jackpot bells and lights came on (mgmt. approval) I didn’t expect to see a dime. I was underage. They paid me anyway and wished me a happy birthday!

Wow. Casinos are usually pretty strict about stuff like that. I’m surprised you got paid instead of getting asked to leave. What a nice birthday present for you. 🙂
Cyn, it was a very nice birthday gift, and the seventies were rather lax. We’d been drinking as well (free drinks) and I was asked to show ID (covering his tracks). He pretended it was my 21st birthday, and I’m forever grateful. The money got me through college while attending UCLA.
Thank you for the explanation, as I had guessed you weren’t carded, but it turns out you were. If your parents were paying for your college education, it probably made them pretty happy also. Literally a win-win situation. 🙂
Won the pot for largest fish pulled in on a fishing charter. Aside from a hefty salmon, I also won a few hundred that actually paid for the charter for me and my boy.
While working at William-Sonoma, I won a 10-piece All-Clad nonstick set for correctly answering 3 questions. It was perfect since our daughter’s wedding was in 2 weeks and I gave it to her.
A chance to be here during crazy times.
I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I won a chain saw. MONTGOMERY WARDS had a raffle. I was getting my tires done.
As a child about 10-12 years I won a huge doll at a local city carnival, I was ecstatic, although at that age I didn’t play much with dolls, but it was the first time I won anything. In 1981 I was in Reno with my ex-husband and another couple, we were playing the slot machines, all of sudden all this money came rattling out, I walked away, I thought the machine broke, my husband said you won something, it turned out I won $100.00 and I only paid 3 times a quarter each time. I have won $100 to #125.00 in scratches tickets about a year and a half ago, within one month. I also years ago won $100.00 on a Super Lotto ticket, seem $100.00 is my magic number. In the late eighties when Bruce Sprinsteen was coming to Shoreline there was a lottery to win a ticket which I did, that too made me ecstatic, I invited a date.
