The state has officially opened a new honor dorm at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, transforming former death row cells into housing for convicted felons who have “demonstrated exceptional behavior and a commitment to rehabilitation.”
The new dorm is located inside the prison’s East Block, where 500 single-occupancy cells have been repurposed into living spaces. The area also includes shared amenities such as a kitchenette, laundry room, and dayroom.
According to Gov. Gavin Newsom, the program is designed to reward personal growth, accountability, and readiness to reenter society. Residents are selected through a review process conducted by a panel from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, with the first group of participants moving in this week.
State officials say the honor dorm is part of the California Model, an initiative focused on rehabilitation, education, and preparing convicted felons for successful reentry into their communities.
I keep looking for this being a joke but i guess not. Inmates dont deserve to be taken care of in this way. They are in prison for a reason. This is bull****. You should see what prison life is like in other countries, its brutal and miserable. Come on America this is pathetic.
Not “convicted felons”… I believe to be on Death Row you have to be a Convicted Murderer.
Right? ~~Not a vehicle accident, not a circumstantial, not even, in most cases, a drunken rage
killing; but an intentional- planned it, did it, not sorry about it…Murderer.
Are they trying to Rehab them? If they have this on Death Row… think what a Three Hots and
Couples Cots, Pizza Thursday and Friday night dances with the STAFF they must be having in the rest of the Joint.
If you have to, GIVE AWAY enough money to not have to pay income taxes in this place!
No Excuses,
.
When Governor Newsom placed a moratorium on the use of the death penalty, he effectively ended “death row,” even though the death penalty is still legal in California. It is unlikely that any new governor will end the moratorium.
Since Newsom has placed a moratorium on the death penalty, the death
row inmates have been relocated to other parts of the prison, and death
row has been empty. What I gather from reading this, it seems that they
will be moving some of the short timers into the new facility. Preparing
prisoners for life on the outside isn’t such a bad idea if it helps them from
re-entering a life of crime after they are released.
I don’t agree with what they’re doing at all, but you’re reading it incorrectly. They’re repurposing cells in death row to make an “honor dorm” for people that are at San Quentin for felonies.
They are not putting people that are on death row in these “dorms”.
Anon,
.
Are those on “death row” not convicted felons who would be eligible because Governor Newsom has pardon power that would allow “death row” inmates the opportunity to re-enter their communities?
Considering how well His Imperial Majesty Emperor newsom has doing with
California’s homelessness, should be something to look forward to (sarcasm)
.
Once released will state bribe them to not resume criminal behavior ? ?
Prepare them for readiness to renter society? Isn’t death row for lifers? Newsom at it again🙄
You’re reading comprehension isn’t that good, is it?
They’re repurposing cells on death row into an “honor dorm” for people that are at San Quentin for felonies. People on death row will not be living in these rooms.
When Newsom leaves office can’t the new boss end Gavin’s chickenbutt moratorium on carrying out the death penalty?
Dr. Jellyfinger,
.
Yes, but that won’t happen.
Meet the new boss… same as the old boss?
The democrat politicians and their supporters sure do love criminals.
….. oh and they didn’t give them yoga & knitting classes? … that’s terrible – I’m sure they gave them their own color TV & Netflix … all on our dime!
They’ve even hosted CrossFit.
It would be nice if they had jobs once released.
They need to be ready to succeed.
We need them to remember to vote for socialism.
if so, we all win
I’m not even going to bother to read or down vote this Rcp troll anymore.
Scum Newsom _ maybe he and Scott pervert Weiner could get together and have sleepovers in his house. What a reprobate the bot of them are !
The landing page use to be super easy to read and navigate. It’s definitely hard to read now and navigating for me isn’t too difficult. Why the change?
I take psychology students to tour the Q. They have many, many, many programs they can avail themselves of. Publishing a newspaper, art classes, computer classes, the works. Richard Allen Davis has a tv, access to books and magazines and can call out-they bring the phone to him. Meanwhile, Polly lays 6 feet under with no amenities.
If I recall correctly we voted to reinstate the death penalty but Gavin vetoed the will of the people. Good job Gavin throw it in our face why don’t you.
FPN,
.
I believe California voters passed a proposition keeping the death penalty in place, but Governor Newsom issued an executive order placing a moratorium on the use of the death penalty.
The Black Knight, Thank you for the correct info.
Will the Honor Dorm be named for George Jackson? Copilot search says “On August 21, 1971 George Jackson was killed by three San Quentin Prison Guards during an escape attempt”…..How the three Guards killed him while having their throats cut is not explained.)
500 ULTRA minimum security inmates. Given number of State inmate firefighting
camps that have been given the AXE, might be difficult to fill all the beds.
An OF COURSE any riots or killings, the public will be informed . . . . .
.
Wouldn’t be it all surprised if, they’ll be putting $20 – $30 into commissary
accounts per week of each well behaved inmate.
.
ONLY, reason for this “Prison Reform program” is bragging rights during
a presidential campaign.
.
As long as there have been, no convictions and sentencing on Federal charges.
