For the Fourth we usually had: grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, potato salad, green salad, garlic bread, bowls of grapes and cherries, chips and dip, and some kind of berry cobbler with ice cream; kids had cold soft drinks, adults had beer or coffee. We covered the long picnic table in the back with a red and white vinyl checked tablecloth and ate hearty. Before our meal we’d usually play horseshoes, while some of the men would stand around the grill with beers, monitoring the meat cooking. Later, someone would host fireworks at their house and us kids would run around with sparklers while the dads opened big boxes of firecrackers. Good days. Great country.
