Thousands of Contra Costa County employees will receive pay raises and one-time bonus payments after the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to approve a series of labor agreements covering multiple employee groups. The approved agreements extend labor contracts while providing general salary increases and one-time lump-sum payments for employees represented by AFSCME Locals 1, 512 and 2700, SEIU Local 1021, IFPTE Local 21, the Deputy District Attorneys Association, the Contra Costa Defenders Association, the District Attorney Investigators Association, and the Western Council of Engineers.

In a separate action, the Board also approved similar salary increases and one-time payments for management, exempt, unrepresented employees and certain elected officials. The Board of Supervisors themselves were not included in Tuesday’s compensation action. Under the approved agreements, employees covered by the In-Home Support Services Public Authority contract will receive a 3% salary increase effective July 1, 2026. Full-time permanent employees will also receive a one-time $1,000 payment, while eligible temporary employees will receive a $500 payment.

Yet, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors claims that Contra Costa County has no money.

Is this why they keep raising our sales tax?

As a retired county employee I would like to clarify what the county calls a “bonus”. Normally it is a $500 – $1000 one time bribery payment to put of contract negotiations. Sadly the new/newer employees don;t get that this money will be taxed at approximately 40% “gift tax/luxury tax” rate and does not add to their retirement fund. I went through this nonsense twice, co-workers and I tried educating fellow employees that only saw either $500 or $1000 and whined and cried when they got approximately $350 or $700. An it was amazing that we never ever ever ever saw the “bonuses” upper management or dept heads got except once and that was when the BoS GAVE Davis Twa and increase in their contribution to his deferred comp bringing by $10,000 a month. So keep in mind this employee bonus is just smoke and mirrors to keep the public from seeing the entire picture

As EVERYONE in the comments on the original story said: “They will Approve it as they do as they please”.

Generally, I do not have a problem with employee increases, it is just the way it is. What struck me was “Thousands of Contra Costa County employees.” How many county employees are there, and how many are needed? I think since our tax dollars pay for this, we should have an idea of what they do. Private business has to trim the workforce, sometimes substantially, of redundant or ineffective positions. I cannot imagine of those “thousands” there is a fair level that are not superfluous.

Jeff
The county staffs a hospital, 5 locations with assorted clinics, 2 jails, 2 sheriff substation, at least 8 public assistants offices, 2 district attorney locations, at least a dozen libraries, auditor controllers office, tax collector, tax assessor , p7blic defender, DCSS, public works, probation dept, animal services and many other depts. Dept have HR people, finance/fiscal staff, support staff etc.
Read up on the county as its more complex than you obviously know
C9ntra Costa is the 9th most popul8county in CA

My point was really that I am sure of those thousands, there are a fair number that are not necessary, where in a private business they would be laid off. I also am opposed to government healthcare; the county should not be involved in staffing hospitals. I know we are past that point the socialists can claim a victory, and one could sarcastically argue there is no need for public defenders, since the DAs do not prosecute (again, some sarcasm).

Well Folks,
.
The Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors should cut the budget of the Contra Costa County Sheriff-Coroner until Sheriff-Coroner David Livingston does something about the theft of firearms by his employees. It’s amazing how many firearms go missing when his people execute search warrants, but there are no records of firearms having been seized, just empty gun cases left behind.

Jeff (the other one),
.
Contra Costa County is one of the twenty largest employers in Contra Costa County.
.
All government entities in Contra Costa County employ about 21,000 individuals, which is about 4% of the workforce in the county.

They’re giving CCC employees a bonus while they hired someone like this…..She has clear anger problems and even works with children. Unbelievable 🤦🏻‍♀️
