Huckleberry’s Breakfast & Lunch in Concord has reopened after temporarily being ordered closed by Contra Costa Environmental Health following the discovery of a cockroach infestation during a routine inspection.
The July 1 inspection resulted in the restaurant, located at 4391 Treat Blvd., being immediately shut down after inspectors documented numerous live, dead and dying cockroaches throughout the kitchen and serving areas. According to the inspection report, inspectors found seven live adult cockroaches, three adolescent roaches and six nymphs in various locations, including the cook line, prep areas and server stations. Suspected cockroach egg cases were also discovered beneath cooking equipment.
Inspectors also cited heavy grease and food debris beneath and behind cooking equipment, gaps in walls that could allow pests to enter, broken floor tiles, and pink buildup inside the restaurant’s ice machine.
Because the infestation posed what officials described as an “imminent health hazard,” Contra Costa Environmental Health suspended the restaurant’s health permit and posted a red closure placard, ordering the business to cease operations immediately.
The report notes that restaurant management contacted a new pest control company during the inspection, and treatment began before inspectors completed their report. Environmental Health required the restaurant to eliminate the infestation, thoroughly clean and sanitize the facility, seal potential pest entry points, dispose of any contaminated food, and pass a follow-up inspection before reopening.
Following a reinspection, Huckleberry’s corrected the violations to the satisfaction of Environmental Health and has since been allowed to reopen.
….. yeah I’ve seen it slowly go downhill… unfortunately like it’s several predecessors …. I don’t give it another year

I heard nothing but bad reviews about this place. Amazed its still open but probably for not much longer.
We stopped going about a year ago. We love the server Debbie, she is amazing… but, the restaurant has a strong sewer (feces) smell right as you walk in. It’s ALWAYS there. I don’t know how people don’t notice. They source all their food from Sysco, nothing is original or scratch-made. It’s all pre-made or packaged crap. The coffee sucks. Take your business elsewhere.
The strong sewer smell has been there years before it was Huckleberry’s.
It’s why we didn’t dine at that building.
Also, driving Hwy 4, Wastewater Treatment, …. makes me gag.
So here’s the thing….. just like the cookie place why does it take the health dept to point out an infestation????? These people know they have a problem and do not address it until they are shut down. The moment I notice the rats or spiders or any other crap noticing my house they need to view it as the last place they will draw air as I will kill them and employ any exterminator needed to keep my house clean. Do these places not care enough to be clean? it is your food…. very curious.
