Probe Into Taco Bell’s Possible Role in ‘Explosive’ Diarrhea Outbreak Is Blowing Up

Federal and state health officials are investigating whether Taco Bell may be connected to a nationwide outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic illness that has sickened more than 5,100 people in 34 states since May, according to a report by the California Post. Some people who became ill reported eating at Taco Bell, mostly in the State of Michigan, while others did not. As a precaution, select Taco Bell locations have temporarily removed lettuce, cilantro, onions, pico de gallo and guacamole from their menus. Health officials have not confirmed a link between Taco Bell and the outbreak. Investigators believe lettuce or other salad greens may be the source, but no specific restaurant, supplier or grower has been identified. Symptoms of cyclosporiasis include severe diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps and bloating.
