I think a lot of anti-data centers is coming from where they are putting many of them. In the center of neighborhoods…like Pittsburg. This is to take advantage of power and water infrastructure that is already there. But it won’t be enough so a new power plant and water source will be needed, and where there simply isn’t enough power…it will take 10-30 years for power plants and source material (gas wells and lines) to be built. In the mean time… Meta, Amazon, etc etc refuse to wait for that infrastructure, and are in the works, as we speak to develop mini-nuclear hubs (also in the middle of neighborhoods)… and @Original G, I love the little bit of AI that I depend on…. but the real issue is simply that BIG DATA isn’t coordinated with power/water, etc in most circumstances. SO they bully and buy their way in! City parks are being sold–to build data centers… Maybe its OK to sell Solano Co Fairgrounds to build Data Center. Or the Cow Palace? Is PG&E putting very important maintenance etc aside for Microsoft? Who can say what $$$ changed hands? PG&E is heavily upgrading its grid infrastructure specifically for Microsoft’s new data center campus in San Jose. Rather than building an entirely new generation “power plant” somewhere out in the boonies… PG&E is installing substantial high-voltage transmission lines and substation upgrades… Power Towers…coming to a neighborhood near you…… A Santa Ana-based company named Global Stack LLC is targeting public land and fairgrounds across California for “edge” data centers. Their pitch includes a small 8-10 megawatt data center, a multi-level parking garage, and a helicopter landing pad.(The Vallejo Sun)
They are specifically targeting the Cow Palace in Daly City and other fairgrounds like the San Mateo County Event Center, pitching the developments as “blackout-proof” community infrastructure. Blackout-proof for them, maybe. How about us? We already can’t claim to be black-out proof.

upgrade is needed.

What is unique about Pittsburg site is it’s being next to a high voltage
transmission corridor. Use mouse to zoom out, shows a SEVEN
existing high power transmission line corridor, next to DATA CENTER site.
Cost to connect up will be minimal.

For so much negativity about data centers being pushed out across America,
there has to be big money behind the effort. Amount of coordination, to me
indicates a state actor. Who stands to gain the most by delaying America’s
roll out of data centers, think Communist China.
