The Water Cooler – What’s One Fear You’ve Never Been Able To Overcome?

QUESTION: What’s one fear you’ve never been able to overcome? We’re not talking about dying, we’re talking about something like heights, birds, spiders, claustrophobia (small spaces), public speaking, flying on a plane, etc.

Snakes. It’s a pretty common fear. I have no idea which ones are poisonous, and I have no desire to get anywhere near them. I don’t care to find out the hard way.

There are no poisonous snakes. Snakes are venomous, which is not the same thing.

Poisonous snakes carry toxins in their skin. Venomous snakes inject toxins through bites. There are both.

Then just don’t eat the poisonous ones & you are a-ok

Are we talking about fears or phobias? What is listed here are phobias,
and I don’t have any phobias. Fear on the other hand, is an emotion that
can be managed. Some fears are appropriate, and healthy, but they are
all manageable. Fear is managed by recognizing it for what it is, and by
not allowing thoughts to become irrational.

Fears are often based on real or perceived danger, whereas phobias are disproportionate or irrational relative to the actual threat. As an avid hiker who lives in semi-rural Lamorinda, my fear of snakes is real, not a phobia. I manage my fear rationally, but I’ve encountered many snakes in my life. Snakes in our backyard late at night are threatening. They could easily get into our home, and we have grandchildren visiting on a regular basis.

Heights. It’s weird though….I get irrationally fearful that someone else is going to fall, not me.

Sharks. I’m terrified and will never go in the ocean again. I used to go to the beach and swim in the ocean when I was younger. But since then, “Jaws, “Open Water”, “The Shallows”, and “47 Meters Down” came out, and I will never get in the ocean again. Also, I saw a news segment a few weeks ago that stated that 97% of the time people are in the ocean, there is usually a shark nearby. It also said that the odds of getting bitten by a shark are about 1 in 4.3 million. But that doesn’t help with my fear! I would probably be the 1 in 4.3 million! I know it’s irrational, but I can’t help how I feel. Nothing specific happened to make me be so afraid of sharks so I don’t know why I’m terrified of them. But I am!
