All local Safeway stores have moved their bottled water displays from outside in the sun to inside the stores. The move comes a day after Claycord reported that dozens of cases of bottled water had been sitting in direct sunlight during the recent hot weather. The story raised questions about storage practices and whether prolonged exposure to high temperatures is appropriate for bottled water.

I remember seeing this in the 80s. I would like to give Safeway the benefit of the doubt that it’s a “storage issue” but the fact that they have a $4.99 sign in front of the water (previous Claycord.com photo) it’s a marketing ploy. It’s warm out, and they’re trying to sell water. Kudos to Claycord.com for calling them out.
They have had bottled water outside for years. I never bought any water from them for that reason.

They just haven’t thought it thru… nevermind the water getting cooked and tasting like plastic, putting it out in front of the store is going to encourage shoppers to put one in the cart before even entering the store… so the basket is already almost half full.
That might discourage buying more and more groceries
I’d keep water near the check stand so that customers can just add the water as they are about to leave & the groceries are all bagged making room for it.
Come on managers, more money more money more money, that’s all the stores really care about anyway.
Pull up, blocking walkway, load five or six for the job site in the truck,
then go inside, stand in line, pay and get back in the truck and leave.

It’s like that all over town. No regard for safety. Sprouts does it too. It’s shameful.

People don’t always think about food handling. Leaving water in the sun can definitely introduce problems. I remember many years ago at work, there was a department that had a bottled water dispenser and spare water bottles next to a window, and during the summer, stuff eventually grew inside the water bottles. Once it was realized, they moved it away from the window, but no one thought about it beforehand.
I suspect Safeway is also not storing bread properly either before it ends up on the shelf. For the last few months, whenever I’ve purchased white bread at Safeway, it’s been stale on the day of purchase, even though the date is out a week. They’re probably keeping the bread in or near a refrigerator in the back that is changing the properties of the bread and making it go stale faster. I don’t buy bread at Safeway anymore.
My biggest complaint is when grocery workers let frozen hashbrowns sit out and completely defrost before putting them into the walk-in freezer, letting them refreeze into a solid unusable brick, which they have no qualms about selling to careless consumers.

You would think that after all the trouble the manufacturer went thru to prepare the potatoes by shredding, blanching, drying and then flash freezing so that it does not freeze all clumped together that some effort to maintain quality would be made!
But nooooooooooo
