A truck struck and damaged the “Historic Downtown Martinez” arched entryway to the Contra Costa County city on Thursday, temporarily shutting down the roadway, according to the city.
The metal sign, which towers over Marina Vista Avenue at Court Street by Waterfront Park, was struck in the early afternoon by an oversized-load vehicle, Martinez officials said, causing a portion of the arch to detach and fall.
Officers and public works staff responded immediately to assess the damage and made necessary repairs to the structure, allowing the roadway to reopen safely to traffic, the city said on social media just before 2:30 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
Additional repairs to the sign will still be needed, the city said, but will be scheduled to minimize traffic impacts.
