Contra Costa Animal Services is asking the public to help relieve overcrowding at its Martinez shelter by adopting a pet, with cats and kittens especially in need of homes. The shelter says it is at capacity after a busy summer that has brought in large numbers of stray animals, along with the annual wave of kittens born during “kitten season.” To encourage adoptions, CCAS has waived adoption fees for all animals. A $25 dog licensing fee may still apply for Contra Costa County residents where required. Every adopted pet is spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped before going home. The shelter currently has more than 150 animals looking for permanent or temporary homes. Residents who aren’t able to adopt can still help by fostering a pet until a permanent home is found. The CCAS Adoption Center is located at 4800 Imhoff Place in Martinez and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with Wednesday hours extended until 7 p.m.

Don’t. If someone can’t afford to purchase a pet how can they can afford to care for a pet??? Pets are more than a companion. They’re a dependent.
If the shelter cannot find a foster home, or a permanent home through adoption,
the animals will be euthanized.

Just because someone takes advantage of the free adoptions doesn’t mean they can’t afford to pay the adoption fees. The shelter is simply offering the free adoptions as an incentive to get these animals into homes and the shelter population down.
