In the case of an emergency is exactly what the school admin staff is there for.
We have already found out through trial and error that this is an objectively bad idea. There is an obvious problem with people let alone young adults living life through their phone and not in reality.
Absolutely not! We didn’t buy our three kids cell phones, and it was one of the wisest parental decisions we’ve ever made.
At recess or after school but never in class. Should be turned off in class or in teacher possession or in a locked box/bag.
Students do not need a phone at recess. Recess is play time and not games on the phone.
Our daughter graduated high school in 2000 and didn’t have a cell phone.
But if she did have a cell phone then, think I would be O.K. if not during class (classroom).
Things are so different from that many years ago.

Actually I don’t care. I don’t have any school age kids anymore, so
it’s not any of my concern. After my wife died, I was left to raise our
daughter on my own, and I believe I did a very good job because
she grew up to become a successful business owner. Smartphones
weren’t invented yet, and if they were, I would never have allowed her
to bring it to school. All through her developing years, I stressed to her
the importance of an education. If she had access to a smartphone at
the time, there is the possibility that she wouldn’t be where she is today.
Smartphones are too tempting, and kids will be kids. I remember when I
was a school kid, if I had a smartphone at the time, there’s no doubt in my
mind that I would have played around with it and communicated back
and forth with my friends. My main focus would not have been on my
school work, and in all probability I would have used the phone to cheat
on my studies and tests. From my observations, I can come up with plenty
of criticism of today’s parents, but I don’t believe it’s my place to do so, so
I will keep my criticism to myself.
Former co-worker’s kids have cell phones they did not have passwords to their
social media accounts, parents do. Their accounts and home computers are
reviewed by parents. All net activity, even activity they try to erase was reviewed
by their parents.
All three kids graduated high school with straight As.

Will be pushing my Grandsons to use same method for electronic activity by
Great Grand Daughter and two Great Grand Sons.

Never. Parents can call the school and students can go to the office to call a parent if need be.

I used to be adamant that students didn’t need communication devices, especially at school. 911 changed my mind.
Okay, but you offer no solution to the problem. If the child is caught using the phone and teachers determine that it was Not being used for emergency…..what’s the punishment? And the student or parent needs provide information to prove whether or not it was used for an emergency.
If an emergency happens the last thing the school needs is parents calling their children tin the classroom. Imagine 35 parents calling into 1 room and all the parents don’t have the facts. The children are upset and start to panic. Be patient and wait until the correct information is out. Allow the principal to get the facts and pass the information on.
How did the planet ever survive before the days of cell phones?
Obviously not. The results of this massive social experiment could hardly be more clear.
No. There is no reason for a child to have a cell phone at school. Emergency? Call the office and someone will come and get your child. Tell them to keep it in their backpack, have a place for students to keep them doesn’t work as well as it should. “I don’t have it” is what teachers will hear from the worst offenders. Class time is taken up by checking for phones. More time is wasted when a student is on the phone and the student refuses to give it to teacher. Someone is called to come and get the phone. Waste of time every day.
