California could soon give local schools more flexibility to bring teachers from other countries into their classrooms. Assembly Bill 2056, now awaiting action from Gov. Gavin Newsom, would allow school districts, county education offices and charter schools to sponsor international teachers directly. The legislation would also remove a one-year restriction on those arrangements. The change could particularly affect recruitment from Mexico and Spain, two countries California schools have turned to for bilingual teachers. A similar proposal was vetoed by Newsom last year after he said schools already had the ability under existing law to expand international teacher sponsorships.

If these people from out of country can’t even speak English very well, how on earth are they going to be a teacher in CA?
Half the students only speak Spanish.

About 20% of California students are ESL students.
You are probably right but stand on the sidewalk outside YVHS when school lets out and get back to me on that 20% estimate.
I went to YVHS in the 80’s and I think it was close to 20% back then…

That’s the average throughout the state, it can vary widely at different schools throughout the state. The entire foreign-born population of California is estimated at about 28%.
Why? California’s student population is declining, which suggests that fewer teachers are needed.
They should need to pass a language proficiency test & CA teacher accreditation (which probably is a low bar anyway from what I’ve seen)
There used to be a basic math and Engiish exam called the CBEST that was required for a teaching credential in California. It is no longer required. The state considers a degree good enough. When it was required there were those who couldn’t pass even with a degree. California used to have an exit exam to graduate high school. But the state eliminated it because some students couldn’t pass it. Rather than raising expectations California lowered them.
Newsom is focused on his White House run.
Therefore he can’t sign off on this.
Besides they have their eye on bringing Cuban educators in to teach Government.
Let ICE do its job and you won’t need them.
Why do we need such an influx of bilingual teachers in our classrooms? If English is our official language, why are we not working towards teaching our youth that language? I get some initial help when folks first legally migrate to the state, but it seems as if someone is trying to buy votes again?
If we can afford to sponsor an international teacher … we should be able to afford to pay a living wage to our current teachers and maybe even hire more. I know … a crazy thought.
This says a lot about what he thinks of the educational system in California. Our students aren’t being educated well enough to become teachers? Get back to basics and let teachers teach. California teachers first!
A lot of long time Teachers quit or retired when the School Districts required them to learn Spanish.
